About this listen

BOOK 3 IN THE BESTSELLING CANON CLEMENT MYSTERY SERIES

'A delightful piece of detective work' Mail on Sunday
'A very moreish read' Daily Telegraph

Canon Daniel Clement has suffered a secret humiliation and to recover takes respite at the monastery where he was a novice. But the monastery doesn't allow the break he needs, for tensions are building there too. There is a death at the monastery, and Daniel thinks it might be murder.

Meanwhile back at Champton, Daniel is the subject of village gossip, his mother Audrey is up to something again, there's trouble at the dress shop, trouble up at the big house, and the puppies are running riot.©2024 Richard Coles

Critic reviews

Coles's feline wit and infectious enthusiasm for ecclesiastical trivia make for a very moreish read. (Jake Kerridge)
Written in Coles's customary wry style which owes much to the work of Alan Bennett. (Geoffrey Wansell)
Richard writes beautifully... a delightful piece of detective work set in a religious order. The atmosphere is so intense, you can almost smell the incense on the page. (Ryan Tubridy)
A village that could rival Agatha Christie's St Mary Mead and the TV murder hotspot of Midsomer for its ever growing body count

I love Richard Cole’s voice and found this to be very relaxing to listen to. However the story is a bit of a disappointment after his first two Cannon Clement books. I thought there was a bit too much ecclesiastical stuff and I missed the wonderful characters of Champton.
I hope Richard will pen another book with more about village life and how things work out for Daniel

Lovely to listen to

I loved this book the wit and satire along side a darker thread too the story line. can't wait to see what is in store in the next book.

Best one yet!

Loved the the fact that we just took up where we left off last time. Daniel and Audrey separated but equally enveloped in their own journeys. Fate seemed set for Daniel….then BAM! The ending!!! Oh boy. Now I have to wait again…..excited!!!

Long awaited release from Rev. Coles, didn’t disappoint

Found the names of character hard so it was hard to remember who was who and it had too much religious content for me so a hard book to follow

Hard to follow

I normally love the Rev’s books but this one was a step too far with the theological references, just too much, frankly a bit dull this time for me sadly. I rather like the fun and games that go on on the estate and village, not enough of it this time and Richard rather canters through all the characters and it’s hard to keep up. Also a little on the predictable side with the big romance!

Bit disappointed
