Summary

Forgive me, Dorothea, for I cannot forgive you. What you do, to this child, to this child's mother, it is wrong...

Roberta likes to collect the letters and postcards she finds in second-hand books. When her father gives her some of her grandmother's belongings, she finds a baffling letter from the grandfather she never knew - dated after he supposedly died in the war.

Dorothy is unhappily married to Albert, who is away at war. When an aeroplane crashes in the field behind her house she meets Squadron Leader Jan Pietrykowski, and as their bond deepens she dares to hope she might find happiness. But fate has other plans for them both, and soon she is hiding a secret so momentous that its shockwaves will touch her granddaughter many years later...

A fascinating story

I found it difficult to get started on this book, but I'm glad I persisted because it gathers up fragments of the past to create a compelling story. The book deals sensitively with some difficult issues and I found it surprisingly thought provoking.

Brilliant

What a thoughtful book. A great way to tell a story. Heart warming and heart breaking. Intriguing. Very well read.

No real surprises or revelations

I too read this on the basis of previous reviews and was disappointed. The plot is a standard WW2 story about love and loss and the impacts of decisions we make. I was expecting more insight or some form of revelation that would surprise me but the story was quite predictable. I just didn't find it very interesting and kept getting distracted. I spotted the one plot twist a mile away. I'm assuming we are meant to draw parallels between the narrator and her grandmother whose story she uncovers but it is not particularly enlightening.

Maudlin and more fitting for Mills and Boon

I bought this on the strength of the reviews but was sorely disappointed. It was a bit like sitting on a bus listening to someone chattering away with details of their life, really - I am not one for wanting to know the minutiae of other people's existence.

Once I got the gist of the plot (?) I just gave up listening. - I felt that I was intruding into someone's space.

Certainly not one for me, I kept waiting for some purpose to be shown, but there was none. A pointless tale!
