From the bestselling author of The Familiars and The Foundling comes Stacey Halls' most compelling and ambitious novel to date.
'Something's not right here.'
I was aware of Mr Booth's eyes on me, and he seemed to hold his breath. 'What do you mean?'
'In the house. With the family.'
West Yorkshire, 1904. When newly graduated nurse Ruby May takes a position looking after the children of Charles and Lilian England, a wealthy couple from a powerful dynasty of mill owners, she hopes it will be the fresh start she needs. But as she adapts to life at the isolated Hardcastle House, it becomes clear there's something not quite right about the beautiful, mysterious Mrs England.
Distant and withdrawn, Lilian shows little interest in her children or charming husband, and is far from the 'angel of the house' Ruby was expecting. As the warm, vivacious Charles welcomes Ruby into the family, a series of strange events forces her to question everything she thought she knew. Ostracised by the servants and feeling increasingly uneasy, Ruby must face her demons in order to prevent history from repeating itself. After all, there's no such thing as the perfect family - and she should know.
Simmering with slow-burning menace, Mrs England is a portrait of an Edwardian marriage, weaving an enthralling story of men and women, power and control, courage, truth and the very darkest deception. Set against the atmospheric West Yorkshire landscape, Stacey Halls' third novel proves her one of the most exciting and compelling new storytellers of our times.

Nurse May takes a job as nursemaid to a family in Yorkshire with 4 children. The story has many areas of interest - historical, class differences, gender inequality, family difficulties and intrigue. The intrigue grows and the story becomes a mission to solve the mystery. When I wasn't listening to this audiobook I was looking forward to mt next chance to do so. And I was sad when it was over!
I've listened to all 3 of Ms Halls' stories now and I put Mrs England up there with The Foundling. The Familiars is not as good in my opinion.
I am already looking forward to her next book!
Another great one from Stacey Halls

The setting of this book, Hardcastle House in Yorkshire, is so well drawn I could imagine walking through the corridors. I lfell in love with the main character, Ruby May, and the way she looks after the adorable children. It was really interesting to learn the background of the Norland Nannies. As the book progresses we learn more about Ruby's tragic backstory. The England family dynamics were fascinating, especially the relationship between Mr & Mrs England.
Imogen Wilde did an excellent job with the narration

In one sense this is a straightforward first person narrative,, with nurse Ruby telling the story of her assignment looking after the four children of a Yorkshire mill owner and his strangely enigmatic wife. As some of the family's secrets start to emerge, Ruby recalls some of the difficult events in her own childhood which resonate in a way that is too close for comfort. She doesn't know who to trust and this affects her mental health. The author keeps the suspense going right to the end of the book, when our courageous heroine finally receives the affirmation she deserves.
