About this listen

Mr Phillips wakes on the morning of July 31st in his modest, nearly mortgage-free home, in the bed he has contentedly shared with his wife of 30 years - though to be honest, at night he lies beside her and dreams of other women. He's ready to face another ordinary day. Except that for Mr Phillips, it is not an ordinary day, for on Friday, July 28th, he was summarily sacked. Nonetheless, he rises at his usual hour and prepares himself as he has done his entire working life for the office he no longer has.

This is the story of one day in the life of a decent man who only 48 hours before knew exactly who and what he was - husband and father, accountant, home-owner, son - and who on this day wonders who and what he can become.

Critic reviews

"It takes real courage and talent to write a novel about an unexceptional man living an unremarkable life, but Lanchester pulls it off with grace and wit." (Booklist)
"Lanchester offers an end-of-the-century version of Mrs. Dalloway with results as brilliantly captivating as Michael Cunningham's were in The Hours." (Kirkus Reviews)

A wonderful gentle tale of an "average" man throughout an unusual day. Viewing London from a different, unemployed perspective and sharing his most personal thoughts and harmless fantasies. It may be uncomfortable for those of us who refuse to admit to our own "inner lives" but t made me laugh out loud! Narration was immaculate!

Whimsical, poignant and risqué!!

Did I lose the plot ... was there a plot to lose? This came over as a seedy, interior, plotless monologue following a day in the life of a nobody! How on earth two people gave it a five star rating I do not know.
