About this listen

*** Memento meets Sharp Objects in this superb thriller from the bestselling author of Something in the Water, a 2019 Richard & Judy Book Club pick***

Original, ingenious and utterly gripping, with characters you’ll really care about as they race towards the brilliantly unexpected ending.’ J P Delaney

When a man is found on a Norfolk beach, drifting in and out of consciousness, with no identification and unable to speak, interest in him is sparked immediately. From the hospital staff who find themselves inexplicably drawn to him; to international medical experts who are baffled by him; to the nationalpress who call him Mr Nobody; everyone wants answers. Who is this man? And what happened to him?

Neuropsychiatrist Dr Emma Lewis is asked to assess the patient. This is her field of expertise, this is the chance she’s been waiting for and this case could make her name known across the world. But therein lies the danger. Emma left this same small town in Norfolk fourteen years ago and has taken great pains to cover all traces of her past since then.

But now something – or someone – is calling her back. And the more time she spends with her patient, the more alarmed she becomes.

Has she walked into danger?

Found the narration not very expressive and I struggled to remain interested at times but was interested enough to keep it on in the background to find out how it ended.

It was ok

After thoroughly enjoying The Family Game, I couldn’t wait to dive into another Catherine Steadman thriller—so Mr. Nobody was my next choice. And it did not disappoint. Steadman once again masterfully blends psychological suspense with intricate character dynamics, creating a story that kept me hooked from start to finish.

The novel follows Dr. Emma Lewis, a neuropsychiatrist tasked with decoding the mystery of a man found on a beach with no memory or identity. As the doctor digs deeper, she realizes he may hold secrets about her own past—secrets no one should know. The eerie tension, coupled with the author's atmospheric writing, makes Mr. Nobody an unsettling yet addictive listen. Having recently finished The Family Game, I really appreciated the way the author uses the psychological mind gamest that some employ in both books—whether through the manipulation and deception within a wealthy family or the haunting uncertainties of memory and identity.

I love it when a talented author also does the audiobook narration, for me, it enhances the experience, pulling me into the twists and turns of the story.

This is a dark and thrilling ride through secrets, suspense, and deeply personal stakes.
