Alexandre Pouchkine met en scène fascination, rancœur et désespoir dans cette œuvre de fiction, Mozart et Salieri, écrite en 1830. Le jeune Mozart est détenteur d'un génie inexplicable, hors de proportion avec sa personnalité immature et tête en l'air. Obsédé par ce talent insolent, le compositeur Antonio Salieri décide de défier Dieu et d'empoisonner son rival, afin de protéger les compositeurs futurs d'un art trop vite porté à sa perfection par un homme qui n'est pas digne de son propre génie.
