About this listen

A boy named Seth drowns, desperate and alone in his final moments, losing his life as the pounding sea claims him. But then he wakes. He is naked, thirsty, starving. But alive. How is that possible? He remembers dying, his bones breaking, his skull dashed upon the rocks. So how is he here? And where is this place? It looks like the suburban English town where he lived as a child, before an unthinkable tragedy happened and his family moved to America. But the neighborhood around his old house is overgrown, covered in dust, and completely abandoned. What’s going on? And why is it that whenever he closes his eyes, he falls prey to vivid, agonising memories that seem more real than the world around him? Seth begins a search for answers, hoping that he might not be alone, that this might not be the hell he fears it to be, that there might be more than just this ...

Critic reviews

"[Ness has] outdone himself ... a terrific exemplar of the eternal teenage desire for there to be, in the words of the novel's title, "more than this" – more than a world in which prejudice and hypocrisy dictate how people should or shouldn't live their lives." ( Guardian)

While so many aspects of this tale has incredibly strong promise, I ultimately felt that it's winding story failed to achieve its full potential. I don't mind a book that leaves it to me to decide how I feel or what the final meaning is supposed to be, but this book felt like it was too afraid to commit strongly enough to any of its own ideas for the openness to be truly satisfying rather than leaving the reader longing. Certainly some incredibly intriguing ideas, and the performance was wonderful (despite some questionable accents).

Great potential, not achieved

A good, meandering, yet thought-provoking story. The author seems to lose the thread a little in places, but, overall, it is an engaging tale. The characters are well-rounded and believable for the most part, but slide in to caricature and stereotypes in places. However, they are believable, relatable and easy to engage with.

The performance, however, is a little bit disappointing. The narrator has only three accents to master - one of which is his own - yet fails quite badly on two of them. It would have been far less jarring had he not attempted the accents at all rather than gone for a strangulated Stewie (Family Guy) for his attempt at a British accent and a weird mix of Russian Gangster and Spaghetti Western Mexican for his buttock-clenchingly embarrassing attempt at a Polish accent.

Credit where it is due, though, the accents were the only poor part of an otherwise excellent performance, but they did jar and detract from the overall narration.

I really enjoyed this book as I feel it had a lot of depth and the characters were really good. I found it a little bit slow to start but once I got into it I couldn't stop reading.

Where does More Than This rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Its not my favourite, but better than some I have listened too.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked the constant guessing - where is he? what is it all about?

Any additional comments?

Great book for OLDER children - wouldn't really reccomend for 11-13, unless thye are mature as there is a mature scene with the main character and his boyfriend in bed. It isn't graphic - but IMO, its not suitable for younger audiances.

Excellent tale!
