About this listen

In the secluded village of Reeth, the Hawthorn family has found their new home, a place shrouded in mystery and dark secrets. The recent murder that took place there has left the house within their budget, but is there a higher price they still have to pay?

On the first night in their new home, Gerald Hawthorn unwittingly releases a Haglard, a sinister creature from local folklore with malevolent intentions. This insidious creature has the power to mimic voices and sounds, tormenting its victims to breaking point before going in for the kill.

With trickery and paranoia turning the Hawthorns against each other, they must uncover the truth before it's too late.

Mockingbird is a modern fairy tale horror from the macabre mind of Steve McElhenny.

A interesting and entertaining story. I liked this one a lot. A family move to a remote small village and unexplained and disturbing things begin to happen. Well written creepy horror story with touches of humour, great characters and a really creepy adversary. I really enjoy Steve's books and this is a good one. Narration is excellent but there are a few noticeable background noises on the recording. A highly recommend short horror story for a winter's night. I received a complimentary copy of the audio and am leaving a honest voluntary review

Steve McElhenny transports us once again back to the good old 80s but this time the location is rural Yorkshire. All hell is breaking loose for the Hawthorn family as they try to make a home for their selves in God's own county. Mockingbird is classic folk horror, a genre sadly noticeable for it's paucity in recent years. Steve's signature humour runs as an undercurrent throughout the narrative but does not detract from the apprehension building rapidly as the story progresses. Despite it's relatively short runtime of 2 hours 40 minutes it's ideally bitesized for those needing a quick ghoulish fix.

Alan Aldersley-Byrne's narration, whilst adequate, lacks any attempts at actual Yorkshire or Cockney accents attributed to the various characters and any audiophile will notice the stop/start background hissing in the production as the various sections are joined together. That said you'll quickly become engrossed in the story and Alan's delivery that these issues become only minor irritants.

Gerald Hawthorn wants to relocate his family from London and when Apple Blossom cottage in Yorkshire is on the market at a much reduced price it seems too good to be true. But Gerald has bought in to far more than he would ever have expected. Fast Paced and well written this is once again Steve McElhenny at his best. It had me laughing at times and on the edge of my seat at others. Alan Aldersley-Byrne's narration was perfect, With drama and suspense in his voice he made a good story outstanding. Highly Recommended.

Having read several of Steve's work previously, this read was one of his more spookier entries. It is, as usual, written to a very high standard and follows a story both eery and one that keeps you guessing what will happen next. I don't want to give anything away, but this is in keeping with his usual standard of top work- deffo worth a read/listen!

Creepy, amusing and certainly worth a listen!
