What if the Dark Lord won?
A thousand years ago evil came to the land and has ruled with an iron hand ever since. The sun shines fitfully under clouds of ash that float down endlessly from the constant eruption of volcanoes. A dark lord rules through the aristocratic families and ordinary folk are condemned to lives in servitude, sold as goods, labouring in the ash fields.
But now a troublemaker has arrived and there is rumour of revolt. A revolt that depends on a criminal no-one can trust and a young girl who must master Allomancy - the magic that lies in all metals.

Continue the series
To be very honest it took a good 4hrs of listening and patience to stick with the story, to understand the setting and to get to know the characters. I'm glad that I didn't give up. The book delivered and its a very good listen. I've gone on to listen to listen to book 2 and about to download book 3. I'm now very attached to the characters and can't wait to see how it all ends, it's much better to listen to the trilogy in succession rather than have to wait years.
Turned out to be good :)

Brandon writes very cleanly and I would prefer more gritty detail to spice up the story, but to be honest the story is perfect as is.
I recommend this book, I was surprised at how good it is.
Fantasy Fiction that will suprise you....

I know Audible lists the duration but I had obviously missed that.
However, Michael Kramer does a superb job of bringing Brandon Sanderson's world to life.
Names and terms come flying at you from all side and it does take (in my case anyway) some time for everything to settle in.
The only other book that I've read that I could compare this to is actually Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Sanderson is weaving plots straight away and the twists and hooks pull you in all sorts of unexpected directions.
What was completely new to me was the magic system - which is very, very detailed. The fight scenes seem a little odd to begin with as he details exactly which power is used to attack and parry. It's a little too prescriptive perhaps but it certainly does make a difference from another re-wording of 'he hit him'.
The political threads are interesting and >become more important in the other two books>.
The main characters are vivid and distinct, especially Vin and Kelsier. I also have a soft-spot for Breeze too but that is because I imagine him as an old-fashioned dandy that will sing you a song for a glass of wine.
As the story is so long, it is sometimes hard to re-count places or names that were mentioned chapters ago but that is a subjective criticism.
Great story, ideal for the (very) long journey.
Long, slow but worth the wait

The idea of metal burning is like nothing iv ever come across before (and i read a lot of fantasy) and its written brilliantly, so clever and so believable at the same time. I will definable be reading the other books in the series!
Kramer's narration is excellent as usual. Is there anyone better to read Sanderson? i don't think so.
Another Sanderson Triumph
