Summary

World-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, in decades of research on achievement and success, has discovered a truly groundbreaking idea - the power of our mindset.

Dweck explains why it's not just our abilities and talent that bring us success but whether we approach them with a fixed or growth mindset. She makes clear why praising intelligence and ability doesn't foster self-esteem and lead to accomplishment but may actually jeopardise success. With the right mindset, we can motivate our kids and help them to raise their grades as well as reach our own goals - personal and professional. Dweck reveals what all great parents, teachers, CEOs and athletes already know: how a simple idea about the brain can create a love of learning and a resilience that is the basis of great accomplishment in every area.

Informative Read

A clear showcase of the benefits of the growth mindset. There are examples across business, relationships and parenting how and why to invest in a growth mindset.

good insights but a bit 1 sided

was a good read! some great tips. however it doesnt really look into the fixed mindset in any detail rather just gives it a bad name. I would have liked to see how using fixed thinking in certain areas can help as well as growth. overall good read but not much science behind the examples. I liked "Power of Habit" as it showed more practical and science backed approaches we can take.

Change in the way we think

Good book. A lot of examples that seem to go on for a while but I guess they set the premise of how changing your thinking can produce favourable outcomes. Could have been shorter but still a worthwhile listen

Amazing help form this book.

I am just in amazement at my own change in behaviour (completely automatic most of the time), as I went through this book.

Tough going in some parts but worth persisting!

Personally did not find the narrator’s voice easy to listen to. Some chapters dragged for me, particularly the ones on sport and business but likely due to them being outside of my scope of interest. Overall , the content is valuable and I’ve gained some useful advice to put into practice!

Life-changing book, appalling narration!

Absolutely fab book which has completely changed the way I think about pretty much everything, I have no idea why they chose tge narrator because her voice is appalling and so hard to listen to, but don't let that put you off the book is too good to miss.

Really interesting and applicable in all aspects of life

As a parent of tiny children I recognise I am fixed mindset and I have to change this. This book has really helped me address that. Also in my career and the things I consider to be my ‘talents’. I have been inhibited to actually do what I’m good at because of my fear of failure. The advice and insight in this book has helped me understand myself.

learned a lot

Enjoyed this book very much. Explains a lot of things I've seen over a few years. It explains how you can promote a switch from fixed to growth mindset which I found very interesting. Somethings I have a fixed approach, some I have growth. You can be both in different areas. Knowing more and being able to recognize these behaviours is useful.

There's often things in these types of books that come back to trip them up; a top athlete or team used as an example turn out to be drug cheats. The one here for me is the admissions essay to a "top university", where the growth mindset kid writes in to ask how they could improve their essay, even though they didn't get admitted and they university reversed their decision because you know growth mindset. These books can never really address acknowledge things like drug cheats or admissions scandals.
