'Milkman
is extraordinary. I've been reading passages aloud for the pleasure of hearing it. It's frightening, hilarious, wily and joyous all at the same time.' - Lisa McInerney, author of The Glorious Heresies

In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister, our protagonist, is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her maybe-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But when first brother-in-law sniffs out her struggle, and rumours start to swell, middle sister becomes 'interesting'. The last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed and to be noticed is dangerous.

Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is the story of inaction with enormous consequences.

I loved this book and feel like I learned a great deal from it, both about the experience of living in a time and place of great fear and about what that does to people.

brilliant book, superbly read

Would have enjoyed a bit more description of people and places and a little less repetition of certain words and terms ‘maybe boyfriend’, for example. Overall, though, an interesting insight into what it might have been like to grow up in a troubled area such as Ardoyne.

Interesting Insight

Anna Burns opus is both beautiful and ugly. It encapsulates such a dark time in the history of Northern Ireland but with great humanity and attention to detail. I struggled to read the actual book . It came alive to me when the author read the words in what sounded like a flawless exposition.

Lyrical and disturbing.

A superbly written and narrated novel, giving a unique and insightful insight into life in Northern Ireland during the 70's. Although the main theme of the book is very grim and disturbing at times it is speckled throughout with every day humour and the foibles of being human .

A Master Piece of Fiction
