This is an honest and dispassionate work. It has a good balance of content from their Fallowfield backgrounds, all the way to their split and present day.

I really enjoyed it. I am from Salford and I have played the bass guitar all of my grown up life. The Smiths are, imho, the best of an amazing selection of bands that emerged post punk in the Manchester and Salford area. They were all the soundtrack to my teenage years but The Smiths stood out due to everything Mike describes so well in this book. To me the sound that they all created - guitar, bass, drums and vocals - will forever be unique. It was lovely to hear Mike narrate in his Manc accent as well, and it spirited me right back home. His love for Andy Rourke is evident throughout the book and it is a fitting tribute to him also.

I liked the fact that Mike Joyce personally narrated this. A lot has been written about The Smiths but this tells the story of the band in a no nonsense authentic way.

Mike starts the book off by stating that he is a positive sort of guy and this comes across throughout this audiobook. He hardly has a bad word to say about Morrissey or Marr and it’s well documented that they both tried to minimise the money that he and Andy Rourke made from The Smiths. There is lots about his life before the Smiths which I enjoyed because it echoed with my own Irish Catholic upbringing in the north west but there was very little about his post Smiths life other than his final meetings with Andy Rourke and when he recorded again with a solo Morrissey in 1989. I’d like to have learned about his life following something as significant as The Smiths.

Loved this. I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. I grew up as a massive Smiths fan so this felt long overdue. It's great to get Mike's perspective. He's very likable and does a cracking job of the narration. He's funny, easy going and non-judgemental, it's like listening to one of your mates. For once I think the audiobook will be better than the book itself. I heartily recommend. xx
