Historical espionage at its very best. Set in 1938 in London and Vienna, a tense and atmospheric thriller told against a backdrop of uncertainty and fear as World War Two threatens.

Stella Fry, who's been working in Vienna for a Jewish family, returns home with no job and a broken heart. She answers an advertisement from a famous mystery writer, Hubert Newman, who needs a manuscript typed. She takes on the job and is shocked the next day to learn of the writer's sudden, unexplained death. She is even more surprised when, twenty-four hours later, she receives Newman's manuscript and reads the Dedication:

Harry Fox, formerly of Special Branch and brilliant at surveillance, has been suspended for some undisclosed misdemeanor. He has his own reasons for being interested in Hubert Newman. He approaches Stella Fry to share his belief that the writer's death was no accident.

A quaint very British story without much thrill, nowhere near as good as the Clara vine series

The book was repetitive and fanciful. The author did not even follow her own recommendations. The reader did not help either.

Conjures up the background atmosphere of late 1938 very well. Good plot twist. A tad unbelievable in places, particularly near the end

keeps you engaged to the end

Parts of this book were brilliant but other parts were missing the substance that the authors other books contained. At times it felt rushed lacking in detail and credence but there were glimmers of this. I just wanted a bit more from the story. Perhaps this will be start of a series where the storyline evolves and grows?

A little disappointed with the story plus someone else was narrating.... different to the other books. The voices and accents were OK but the general narration was so fast, it wasn't pleasant to listen to at times. Shame........
