Story
They moved everyone that long hot summer fifteen years ago. They needed a new reservoir and an old community seemed a cheap price to pay. They even dug up the dead and moved them too. But four inhabitants of the valley they couldn't move, for nobody knew where they were. Three little girls had gone missing, and the prime suspect in their disappearance, Benny Lightfoot. This was Andy Dalziel's worst case and now fifteen years on he looks set to relive it. It's another long hot summer.

Summary
It starts with a phone call to Superintendent Dalziel from an old friend asking for help. But where it ends is a very different story.
Gina Wolfe has come to Mid-Yorkshire in search of her missing husband, believed dead. Her fiance, Commander Mick Purdy of the Met, thinks Dalziel should be able to take care of the job.
What none of them realize is how events set in motion decades ago will come to a violent head on this otherwise ordinary summer's day.

Excellent
I never fancied the television series and so I would probably never had read this had I not read The Woodcutter by the same author . Now I'm hooked. I found it difficult to stop listening to, loved the characters and the storyline and thought it had a very satisfactory ending. Perfect in fact from start to finish.

An excellent book with the same narrator as The Woodcutter. Fast paced and well written. You do not have to have any prior knowledge of Dalziel to enjoy it. I would definitely recommend it.

Briliant, entertaining book.
This was the first Dalziel and Pascoe I have listened to and it didn't disappoint. I had just finished listening to The Woodcutter read by Jonathan Keeble and I picked this book because it was the same narrator. The story keeps you interested from the beginning and you feel like you know the characters really well. The plot and ending are brilliant and I listened to the last chapter several times. I now want to listen to more Dalziel and Pascoe.

Thoroughly enjoyable story, great narrator
Where does Midnight Fugue rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I purchased this audiobook off the back of The Woodcutter as I'd enjoyed it so much. I was not disappointed, the narrator was fabulous (again!) and so was the story. I hadn't ready or listened to any of the previous Dalziel and Pascoe books but it was easy enough to pick up.

Super tale, but...
A cracking tale and great characterisations by Jonathan Keeble throughout - he is a master of tone and character. There's just one thing I'd ask - for I've listened to a number of these novels via Audible now and have enjoyed them greatly: please don't let Wieldy's voice channel the spirit of Alan Bennett! Mr Keeble has beautifully created each character in this super tale and his vocal work really complements the story - but please can we have the laconic, brusque and delightfully gruff Wieldy back? This was the only jarring note in an otherwise accomplished, delightfully convoluted tajayy

Had me chuckling.
Narrator's portrayal of Dalziel was superb!
I thought the storyline was good - a little unsurprising, but the characters were excellently depicted by the author and given breath by the narrator.
Good twist at the end!
Recommended. Ps I haven't heard any of the other Dalziel & Pascoe stories before - this can stand alone very well.

Meh......rather cliched
This is my first Dalziel and Pascoe story, and I think it stands on its own and I didn't feel I needed to have read the others beforehand. And I'm glad I didn't, I guess, because they seem rather cliched. The characters and the story aren't bad, but not terribly novel or interesting either......the best thing about the book was the creation of the overlapping time frames to illustrate how everything happened in a single day.
Probably good for fans of these characters, but I thought it was just OK......I certainly didn't like it as much as I enjoyed The Woodcutter.

Too urban
I do not like gangster mysteries. I guess I like my mysteries driven by other things besides urban gangsters, because, like the stupid vampire mysteries , it is too easy to throw in any resolution to problem and not develop characters.
I do not like any of the characters in this book.
