For decades we have been taught that fat is bad for us, carbohydrates better, and that the key to a healthy weight is eating less and exercising more. Yet despite this advice, we have seen unprecedented epidemics of obesity and diabetes. Taubes argues that the problem lies in refined carbohydrates, like white flour, easily digested starches, and sugars, and that the key to good health is the kind of calories we take in, not the number.

Today, most doctors, dietitians, and even diabetes specialists consider type 2 diabetes to be a chronic and progressive disease - a life sentence with no possibility of parole. But the truth, as Dr. Fung reveals in this paradigm-shifting book, is that type 2 diabetes is reversible. Writing with clear, persuasive language, he explains why conventional treatments that rely on insulin or other blood-glucose-lowering drugs can actually exacerbate the problem, leading to significant weight gain and even heart disease.

Why do most diets fail? Why does one person eat a certain meal and gain weight, while another eating the same meal loses pounds? Why, despite all the advice about what to eat, are we all still getting fatter? The answers are much more surprising - and fascinating - than we've been led to believe. The key to health and weight loss lies not in the latest fad diet, nor even in the simple mantra of 'eat less, exercise more', but in the microbes already inside us.

Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever. Obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical, society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup.

Setting out the case for this ‘ketogenic’ approach to eating, Gary Taubes analyses the bad science behind the nutritional dogma that has brought us to a diabetes and obesity crisis.

Calorie information is ubiquitous. We see authoritative numbers that tell us the calorie count of what we're about to consume everywhere. Here's the thing, however, that most people have no idea about. All of the calorie counts that you see everywhere today, are wrong. Dr Giles Yeo, obesity researcher at Cambridge University, challenges the conventional model and demonstrates that all calories are not created equal. He addresses why popular diets succeed, at least in the short term, and why they ultimately fail, and what your environment has to do with your bodyweight.

A leading cardiovascular research scientist upends the low-salt myth, proving that salt may be one solution to - rather than a cause of - the chronic disease crisis. We've all heard the recommendation: no more than a teaspoon of salt a day for a healthy heart. But there's one big problem with this: the majority of us don't need to watch our salt. For most, salt protects against a host of aliments, including internal starvation, insulin resistance, diabetes and heart disease - not to mention, it tastes great.

Thought Provoking
- By D Frew on 04-10-19
Summary
It's not what you eat that's damaging your health; it's how that food is 'made'. The truth behind ultra-processed food that the food industry doesn't want you to know.
Did you know that 62 per cent of the food in our supermarkets is not only processed but 'ultra-processed' (ingredients from other foods are combined to make something 'new', often in colours that do not exist in nature) and that data shows that by eating this kind of food over time we are literally slowly poisoning ourselves?
In the hard-hitting, groundbreaking tradition of his NY Times best seller Fat Chance, which revealed the dangers of sugar, Dr Robert Lustig persuasively presents a stark exposé of how our addiction to processed foods (aided and abetted by the food industry, big ag, big pharma, institutional medicine and the government) is behind the lethal increase in major non-communicable diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, fatty liver disease, cancer and dementia. We have come to accept that these chronic diseases are simply part of the 'natural ageing process', but Dr Lustig makes the case that this is simply not true.
The solution on both a personal and societal level is a return to unprocessed food, and Dr Lustig offers a doable plan for us to heal and restore our own health and well-being with real food, and in the process boosting our immunity to viruses like COVID-19.

Robert is a pioneer
I hope that many readers will learn from this book. But I suspect that he is preaching to the converted. However I have been writing, blogging and sharing my views on processed foods now for many years. And I will share what I’ve learnt myself from this excellent well researched book.
If only it would influence millions of people. The only way we can win the war of real food versus processed foods is with our wallets, or should I say credit cards? and weekly shopping. I can see a gradual shift in the last ten years, but only wish it would speed up.
I was impressed and interested in what he says about global warming, and it’s connection with processed foods. Especially sugar.
I read the John Yudkin book “Pure white and deadly” when it first came out in the 80’s. This planet is taking a long time to get the message! I’m glad that John is one of Roberts hero’s
I know from fifty years of struggle with sugar addiction that it exists. I also witnessed my late husband become diabetic, having consumed vast quantities of sugar, but because he was always thin thought he could get away with it.
Read this book if you want to change the climate with global warming, health and lifestyle.

Modern medicine is the problem... Idiotic nonsense
Been a while since I was this angry. This review is based on the first 25 minutes as it quickly became apparent what loopy rabbit hole this was going down.
"Modern medicine isn't the solution to our problems. Modern Medicine is the problem"... Straight away alarm bells are ringing.
While this idiot does at least stop short of saying that all cancer is simply a result of bad diet (at least in the 25 odd minutes I lasted), it is very much implied.
Nice to know that I can carry on smoking 40 a day, whilst getting a sun tan without any cream on top of Chernobyl pre sarcophagus power plant and as long as I eat right I will never get cancer.
And hopefully when the author gets into any kind of traffic accident someone will be on hand to get him a fresh organic salad stat.
While I do believe in the damage our modern highly processed diets are truley terrible for us and in the future we will look back in amazement at the damage we did to ourselves. Implying that if only we went back to pre industrial diets would eliminate the need for modern medicine is absolutely stupid and I couldn't take it.
Also how does this idiot explain childhood cancers if it's all down to diet? They haven't spent the last few decades eaten an American diet.
Avoid this book unless you're an anti-vaxer Q-anon and/or flat earther.
Hope I can get my money back for this rubbish otherwise the rage will kill me before sugar gets a chance.

Life changing
This book is life changing. When I saw Dr Robert Lustig in a you tube program I realised for the first time in my 60 years why I had gained so much weight. This book sets out simply the way the food industry has changed during my life time and that of my children all born in the 1980’s. I can now move forward with a plan adopting real change for the better for me, my husband, children and grandchildren. This is one of those life changing books that everyone needs to read and I can not recommend it enough.

Perfect.
This book is an absolute must, I study ancestral health, and have read many books on insulin, paleo, carnivore etc etc. This audio book balances all that research out nicely by filling in the gaps regarding processed food. We all know it’s shit and bad for us, but we don’t really understand why, this is the only audio book to date, that after completing went straight back to the beginning to listen again. I will probably buy the physical book also, I found it that important/good. Robert Lustig is an incredible human being.

I love the work of Dr Robert Lustig. The quality of this audio was brilliant!
I have the hard copy book, but never been able to read on the tube as it was almost always packed on my way to work. Getting it in audio instead was a great idea, and I loved how the person presenting it had similar voice to Robert. Insightful and revolutional information from this book lets us see how corrupt is big food and big pharma, and they go so far to fool ordinary people to get more money. Two years now I am limiting my process food and sugar intake and it makes such a huge difference! I hope Robert’s work will be able to reach as many people as possible, and transform our broken food system and knowledge around health and nutrition.
