Summary
“A life-altering debut featuring fierce, funny, and irreverent women who battle the most powerful institution in the world. This is the book we’ve all been waiting for.” (Amy Schumer)
She would stop at nothing to protect the women under her care.
Inside a century-old row house in Brooklyn, renegade Sister Evelyn and her fellow nuns preside over a safe haven for the abused and abandoned. Gruff and indomitable on the surface, warm and wry underneath, little daunts Evelyn, until she receives word that Mercy House will be investigated by Bishop Hawkins, a man with whom she shares a dark history. In order to protect everything they’ve built, the nuns must conceal many of their methods, which are forbidden by the Catholic Church.
Evelyn will go to great lengths to defend all that she loves. She confronts a gang member, defies the church, challenges her own beliefs, and faces her past. She is bolstered by the other nuns and the vibrant, diverse residents of the shelter - Lucia, Mei-Li, Desiree, Esther, and Katrina - whose differences are outweighed by what unites them: They’ve all been broken by men but are determined to rebuild.
Amidst her fight, Evelyn discovers the extraordinary power of mercy and the grace it grants, not just to those who receive it, but to those strong enough to bestow it.

Good story but trigger warning
Good story about women but trigger warning for the sexual assault descriptions throughout. Somewhat gritty story of a convent with nuns operating a domestic violence shelter while the story interweaves Catholic church sex scandals. Good description and dialogue, as a reader I felt the characters and was transported to the welcoming, old and worn convent. We had a great book club discussion.

Refreshing and wonderful....
By in large, I love stories where institutions take it on the chin... and this is no exception. Sister Evelyn has some secrets which make her all the more compassionate with the residents of Mercy House, a refuge for women victimized by their partners, and one where they are accepted and loved. Yet the institution of the Catholic Church wants to shut Mercy House down. Why? You'll just have to read the book to find out. The performances were fabulous... Dawn Harvey as Sr. Evelyn and her New York twang reminded me so much of a dear friend that it was like the friend was reading the book (their personalities are also similar!). The other voices are not used as much, but effective when they appear. Overall a great book, and I would love a sequel.

By far this will be in my top 5 of the year!!!!
I contacted the author so that I could thank her for such an incredible book!!! I simply love it and since I want to provide a valid and convincing review, I will do it shortly. If you read this looking for guidance whereas to read this or not, let me tell you this: YES! DO IT! DON'T HESITATE! And don't trust any review saying otherwise xD A few words come to mind when describing this book, but one that resonates the loudest is: *resilient*. I have to say that I love the empowerment that the author gives to these women, who, through their life experiences, start divorcing slowly the archaic and judgmental beliefs of the higher institution that they are supposed to obey blindly. As we hear the nuns telling their stories of how they progressed through time, the story moves ravenously fast to the main and insufferable conflict. In “Mercy House”, Alena Dillon creates this dichotomy of powerlessness and, funny enough, empowerment. For decades, the nuns have been bossed around and stepped on as if their vocation had no validity besides being the maids of the priests. While telling the stories of how these women give shelter to these victims, they also tell their own stories on how the institution that they bowed to has been violently attacking them as well. Check the rest of the review on my blog!

Hmmm.
It was a very good book. I think it could have been better if it told more of the womens stories of recovery and how Mercy House did that for them, but it was still worth the read.

Good storyline with a stupid ending
Seriously? The storyline was interesting enough for me to get past the annoying breathy sickly sweet voice of one of the characters (fake sounding to boot). An older nun who had been attacked when young by a priest and then becoming his victim in an altogether different way later in life. And of course you have to throw in a cast of characters including a gay priest (predictable but not unbelievable to the story line) but the ending (spoiler alert) turns out she too is a closet homosexual. Seriously? To be clear I have nothing against gays and I think including different sexual tastes can make a story line more realistic and rounded. But this just makes it appear like everyone in the Catholic Church is either gay or a pervert. Ruined the whole storyline and could have gone so many better ways with the ending. Disappointing!
