Summary
The bestselling author of Crisis Economics argues that we are heading towards the worst economic catastrophe of our lifetimes, unless we can defend against ten terrifying threats.
Renowned economist Nouriel Roubini was nicknamed 'Dr Doom,' until his prediction of the 2008 housing crisis and Great Recession came true—when it was too late. Now he is back with a much scarier prediction, one that we ignore at our peril. There are no fewer than ten overlapping, interconnected threats that are so serious, he calls them Megathreats. From the worst debt crisis the world has ever seen, to governments pumping out too much money, to borders that are blocked to workers and to many shipments of goods, to the rise of a new superpower competition between China and the U.S., to climate change that strikes directly at our most populated cities, we are facing not one, not two, but ten causes of disaster. There is a slight chance we can avoid them, if we come to our senses—but we must act now.
In the 1970s, the U.S. faced stagflation: high rates of inflation combined with stagnant employment and growth. Today, we are heading towards a Great Stagflation that will make the 1970s look like a walk in the park.
Critic reviews
"Roubini has surpassed even his high standards: the ten Megathreats he details are as scary as they are plausible. Forewarned is forearmed. Read and pay attention." (Martin Wolf)

Ok but a lot of waffle
Doesn’t give the solutions promised. A few ideas but not much that we don’t already know.

A vital book ruined by terrible narration
This a vital and outstanding book. I think I can already perceive its influence in political and economic decision-making in the UK, France and USA. I can certainly recognise the mega threats developing around the world. However, the narration is absolutely terrible with robotic intonation and often little attention to the structure of sentences. The concepts within the book were obviously beyond the understanding of the narrator, who just plodded through the words one after another to get the work done. For a while I thought that the AI that constitutes one of the Megathreats was actually doing the narration!
I did my best but in the end I gave up about three quarters of the way through and bought the printed edition.
Audible need to do better.

Excellent, but worrying read
A probably bleak global future analysed by threat type. Is forewarned forearmed? Or is it better to live in ignorance until until the threats are realised?

good overall but lots of repetition
pretty dark future but probably containing some amount of truth. the book itself is let down a bit by the fact that some points are repeated literally dozens of times leading to some fatigue in listening to it.

Spoiled by subpar production
The book is well written, insightful and almost enjoyable (if not for the subject matter) but poor editing with the narrators tone of voice changing all the time was very distracting. The author's arguments for each threat are well explained and given his track record in making such predictions I was left feeling rather down... Nonetheless it's a worthwhile listen.

Worrying
Roubini spells out what is becoming more clear by the day, that the powers that be are steering us onto the rocks of financial and societal collapse.

an excellent book but poor audible voice
need to actually buy the 0aper version, the reading of this is very dull, monotone and kills what is a very interesting read. seems to be an AI voice ..

Excellent and timely book
Great, if unsettling, read. Very well researched and written. The narrator sounds a bit like an AI, though, and I would have appreciated a more human sounding reader.

insightful but little in the way of solutions
The content is interesting but incomplete. The author lays out 10 megathreats, all of which are valid. The weakness of this as a holistic treatmen of the issuest is the lack of solutions provided to mitigate the threats posed.
Narration is all over the place.
