About this listen

Leaving his home of Freetown, Sierra Leone, to further his education, Haji Abimbola travels to Texas to study chemical engineering. It seemed he could never please his father, but in a quest to prove that he is capable of great things, Haji excels in his field of study. After several major accomplishments and still not having the approval he longs for, he chooses to live life on his terms.

Journeying to the United States, Chinara Nwachucku sets out to make a successful life for herself to help her family back home in Nigeria, but it's taking much longer than she anticipated. Being laid off from her job is the blow that brings her to her knees. As if her life isn't stressful enough, she catches the attention of a man that seems to be the type to only want one thing. While her interest is piqued because Haji is attractive, she feels that he will only be a complication in her life.

Both Haji and Chinara experience trying times and their struggles bring them across one another's paths once again. Haji believes that in order to make it through those struggles, they have to do it together. Will he be able to convince Chinara of this fact, or will it fall on deaf ears?

Contains mature themes.

This was a refreshing take on an African American tale that centred Africans who migrate for different reasons. I identified with the tale as many of my friends see their journey in this way. Great narration of course. Loved it x

African heat in contemporary U.S.

I truly enjoyed this story; it was definitely worth listening to. The African and American story was well depicted.

A wonderful story.

I get what the author was going for—telling the story of two migrants falling in love—and I respect that, but the execution could’ve been better. The cultural details felt off, like using Kente for an Igbo wedding in Lagos. That just wouldn’t happen, and as someone who knows, it was hard to overlook. Plus, the FMC’s surname was spelled wrong, which took me out of the story.

I really wanted to like this, but the cultural stuff bugged me. On top of that, the relationship felt rushed—there wasn’t much of a build-up, so the connection didn’t feel real to me. Great idea, but it didn’t quite land.

Great Idea, But Missed the Mark

The story line was okay. Almost insta romance. However I am confused about the research on the cultures. Chinara is Igbo but her native language was depicted as Yoruba. Haji also has a Yoruba last name but unless I missed it nothing was mentioned about him having a heritage apart from being Sierra Leonanian. Takes you out of the story a bit if you are aware of the cultures.

Okay story

Would have been a great story if the author took time research the cultures, names and realities of the characters in her own story.
She had a main female character with Igbo names from parents with Yoruba names.
Sierra Leonians with Nigerian names (all mishmashed across different tribes) and worst of all, a Ghanaian wedding ceremony passed off as a Nigerian one.
A simple google search would have solved these technicalities and made a rather fanciful story marginally believable

Poorly researched
