Summary

To Arjan Banga, returning to the Black Country after the unexpected death of his father, his family's corner shop represents everything he has tried to leave behind. But when his mother insists on keeping the shop open, he finds himself being dragged back, forced into big decisions about his imminent marriage back in London, and uncovering the history of his broken family.

excellent

Absolutely loved it. A real insight into life in the Midlands for Indian families. I can see the shop and the characters in my minds eye.

Try 'The old wives tale' instead

Any additional comments?

I feel that this is a pale copy of Arnold Bennett's 'The Old Wives' Tale' without the depth or realism of that classic and with a frankly ludicrous ending. Read the original, skip this.

Great characterisation!

I really enjoyed the story line, characters and the intricacies of the family dynamics.

Funny and touching

This is a deftly narrated and nuanced story, which combines acerbic humour and touching, delicately evoked emotion.
