I've listened to many Stephen Fry books this is rather unusual and not what I expected.

Firstly I’m a fan of Stephen Fry and Richard E Grant and enjoyed their narration. The first half of the book was intriguing but I was constantly wondering what was going on and the depth of the story during the Great War in the German trenches still baffles me, why? Who! What! but it was an enjoyable bewilderment. However the second half was easier to follow as the hard work of laying the foundations had been done in first half. You won’t be bored listening to this and I became increasingly invested as the story unfolded and I grasped the plot. And overall I thoroughly enjoyed buoyed it. As others have said stick with it!

I mean, i would listen to Stephen Fry read the Old Testament eith commentary, but his own prose is such smart, flowing and witty text as ever! The story is interesting and gripping with a light splash of ethical ponderings. Probably will listen to it again and most definitely will gift it to friends!

Lighthearted maybe too lighthearted but I guess that’s to be expected from Fry. There is a small scene that saved a star in the review as the main character is annoying. Not to spoil the story but I found it somewhat offensive how a Cambridge history graduate student could be so ignorant but then again this is a lighthearted comedy. An entertaining story from a posh liberal middle aged white guy in from the 90’s. Somewhat blinkered.

Lighthearted, with long winded monologues and lists bulking up the narrative; sometimes overdone.
