A unique science fiction first-contact novel told from the aliens' point-of-view; a 21st-century Gulliver's Travels with Homo sapiens as the Lilliputians. The last thing the factfinders - who call themselves Life - expected to find while traveling in space in The Curious on a mission from their planet, The Living World, was other life. But one day they stumble upon the third planet out from a backwater sun and find it teeming with a vast diversity of life, including one sentient and cognizant, if primitive, species that they dub: Otherlife.

It's 1814, and Napoleon is hard-pressed to defend France from a combination of Russia, Prussia, Austria and Britain. Nor is he the only one in a quandary. Matthew Hervey, a young British cornet, is in a rather unusual situation. As far as he knows, it's highly irregular to be arrested on a battlefield after a successful action. Still, it's hardly the first time politics has interrupted war, and as Hervey's career progresses, he increasingly balances both, sometimes more successfully than others!

Great story let down by boring reader
- By Tommy Two-sheds on 31-07-19
Summary
In this compelling, richly researched novel, author Andrew Joyce tells a story of determination and grit as the Mahoney clan fights to gain a foothold in America.
From the beginning of the narration to the end, fans of Edward Rutherfurd and W. Michael Gear will enjoy this riveting, historically accurate tale of adventure, endurance, and hope.
In the second year of a Gorta Mhór - the great famine - 19-year-old Devin Mahoney lies on the dirt floor of his small, dark cabin. He has not eaten in five days. His only hope of survival is to get to America, the land of milk and honey.
After surviving disease and storms at sea that decimate crew and passengers alike, Devin’s ship limps into New York Harbor, three days before Christmas in 1849. Thus starts an epic journey that will take him and his descendants through 114 years of American history, including the Civil War, the Wild West, and the Great Depression.

Amazing story
From it’s opening paragraphs, this book pulled me in and then never let go. This epic story outlining the individual lives of three generations of The Mahoney family was skillfully and entertainingly told. The listener was afforded historically accurate references as the story of this strong and determined family was revealed. It is a story that leaves you satisfied at it’s conclusion, yet yearning for more. Hollywood would be lucky to get their hands on this story. At it’s conclusion I found myself thinking about who my favorite Mahoney was, soon realizing it is really hard to choose and not necessary to do so. I prefer keeping them as a part of the honorable, determined and decent whole from which they came. I look forward to listening/reading more from this gifted author. This is a great book which I thoroughly enjoyed. Highly recommend! Patty M 7/2020

Very predictable story, terrible narration. I was hoping for better but it wasn’t. The accents were particularly difficult.
