Summary
Magellan stach im Jahr 1519 mit seiner Flotte aus fünf Dreimastern in See. Die Fahrt ging ins Ungewisse, sein Ziel: einen westlichen Weg zu den Gewürzinseln zu finden. Drei Jahre später kehrte nur eines der fünf Schiffe zurück, lediglich 18 Mann hatten die Fahrt überlebt. Trotzdem war die Fahrt ein epochaler Triumph: Magellan hatte nicht nur eine Passage zum Pazifischen Ozean gefunden, erstmals war die Welt umsegelt worden. Dies war der praktische Beweis für die Theorie des Astronomen Kopernikus, der behauptet hatte: Die Erde ist rund.
