"Madame Bovary" è il romanzo più famoso di Gustave Flaubert. Pubblicato nel 1856, diviene subito oggetto di un processo per oltraggio alla pubblica morale. I personaggi che popolano il romanzo rappresentano infatti lo sgretolamento e la decadenza della società borghese. La protagonista del romanzo, Emma Bovary, è un'antieroina: moglie di un mediocre medico di provincia, rifiuta la propria realtà borghese e tenta di vivere l'esistenza descritta nelle sue letture giovanili, gettandosi così in amori adulteri, contraendo debiti e giungendo infine a causare la propria rovina e quella del marito. Il suo personaggio e la sua condotta risultano tanto oltraggiosi per l'ipocrita morale borghese quanto fedeli al vero per i più importanti attori della scena letteraria parigina: Madame Bovary riscuote il consenso di scrittori del calibro di George Sand e Victor Hugo e, con la sua descrizione oggettiva dei fatti, apre la strada al naturalismo letterario. Il processo intentato contro l'autore, che si risolve nell'assoluzione dello scrittore e del romanzo, è seguito dalla definitiva affermazione di Flaubert nel panorama letterario francese e da un enorme successo di critica e di pubblico, che si prolunga fino ad oggi.
