About this listen

Panoply is a small, efficient police force, dedicated to maintaining the rule of democracy among the ten thousand disparate city states orbiting the planet Yellowstone.

Ingvar Tench was one of Panoply's most experienced operatives. So why did she walk alone and virtually unarmed into a habitat with a vicious grudge against her organisation?

As his colleagues pick up the pieces, Dreyfus must face his conscience. Four years ago, when an investigation linked to one of his most dangerous adversaries got a little too personal, Dreyfus arranged for Tench to continue the enquiry by proxy.

In using her - even though he had his reasons - did Dreyfus also put her in the line of fire?

And what does Tench's misadventure tell him about an enemy he had hoped was dormant?

Another excellent tail from Alistair Reynolds. Twist and turns as usual. Highly recommended narration was very good story was very good. I have to wait for another book in the Revelation space world.

Well about time, we had another one of these books

John Lee gave an excellent performance. Clear and distinct speech. The story rolled along nicely. Giving more depth of the Glitter Band (really needs to change that name!). It did nothing to stop.

Well performed excellent tale

With this installment you really appreciate what Reynolds has been doing with The Prefect series of books, I'm going to miss the series 💔

The Prefect series keeps getting better

A good end to the trilogy even if it does sometimes fall into the trap of talking down the (Presumably oh so uncomfortably) 'non modern' protagonist in a way that jarred against the 2007 original. Making the language and characters more in line with a 2007 audience would have felt like a better fit to the universe as a whole than trying to crowbar in unwelcome 2024 internet rubbish.
Some characters also seem weirdly blasé with their own lives, which veers into silliness when they're running headlong into atomization at the drop of a hat so the plot can happen. Reynolds has always had a thing for hostage taking as a plot device and it's overused here: particularly toward the end. I was hoping for someone to say 'fuck it' and disregard the hostages, if only to break up the monotony.
It isn't enough to shoot the series down, but it's not as strong as the original Revelation Space series either.

A decent send off
