Summary

Tesla Motors and CEO Elon Musk have become household names, shaking up the staid auto industry by creating a set of innovative electric vehicles that have wowed the marketplace and defied conventional wisdom. The company's market valuation now rivals that of long-established automakers, and, to many industry observers, Tesla is defining the future of the industry. But behind the hype, Tesla has some serious deficiencies that raise questions about its sky-high valuation, and even its ultimate survival.

Tesla's commitment to innovation has led it to reject the careful, zero-defects approach of other car manufacturers, even as it struggles to mass-produce cars reliably, and with minimal defects. While most car manufacturers struggle with the razor-thin margins of mid-priced sedans, Tesla's strategy requires that the Model 3 finally bring it to profitability, even as the high-priced Roadster and Model S both lost money. And Tesla's approach of continually focusing on the future, even as commitments and deadlines are repeatedly missed, may ultimately test the patience of all but its most devoted fans.

In Ludicrous, journalist and auto industry analyst Edward Niedermeyer lays bare the disconnect between the popular perception of Tesla and the day-to-day realities of the company - and the cars it produces.

A sober view on Tesla

An amazing work on Tesla and automotive industry in general. Provides a thorough review of the company's history, operations, promises, deliveries and hype. Highly recommended to everyone who is interested in Tesla as a business and those who read Ashlee Vance's book about Elon Musk to have a broader view of the company.

Biased

Whilst some the book makes fair comments of Tesla’s challenges and mistakes, its clear the author is grinding an axe. Very one sided and clearly trying to put Tesla and Elon down, focusing and comparing them to the archaic car giants like Ford, who he portrays in a good light.
Those car giants are still no where in this currently 1 horse race.
Finally, where Tesla and Autonomous driving are today (dec 2019) are leaps and bounds ahead of where this book ends.
I was looking for a balanced ‘counter’ view of Tesla from an investment perspective. This is clearly too one sided to give credence imo.

Lazy hitpiece

Pretty lazy assortment of hitpiece blogs. Author constantly contradicts himself. One minute he points out the pitfalls of Tesla’s strategy, next he says the rest of the auto industry should do it. Then he critiques Tesla’s projections but regurgitates the auto industry’s without any analysis. As the creator of the Tesla deathwatch it’s not surprising that the author has an axe to grind, but this is lazy at best. Give it a miss.

Absolute rubbish

The most myopic, biased, boring book I've ever had to endure. If you're expecting an interesting, fact-filled and insightful book about Tesla then, like me, you'll be sorely disappointed.

Wouldn't recommend this book if they were paying people to read it.

A vendetta against Elon Musk

This author provides a one sided story of Tesla and is a personal attack on Elon Musk. As a happy owner of two Teslas since 2012, the quality and service have surpassed any cars I have owned since 1968. While Tesla is not perfect and Musk is prone to wild exaggeration, the cars continue to stand out as enviable. Elon Musk is an innovator much like Steve Jobs. Mercurial yes but also brilliant.
This book is a disservice to the brand and CEO.

99% negative perspective of tesla. Disappointed.

I was hoping for a balanced approach. I felt like all I got was a history of every negative event in teslas history.

Anti-Tesla and Extremely Biased

The author claims to be an unbiased journalist, but a quick Google search reveals he ran Tesla Deathwatch, a blog founded in 2008 that ran anti-Tesla propaganda counting the days until Tesla's demise. Nearly a decade later, Tesla is stronger than ever. Yet the author clearly has an ax-to-grind and attempts to revive his blog in book form, pointing out the weaknesses of Tesla by comparing it to 100 year-old legacy automobile companies and expecting it to immediately perform that way. Any unbiased person with common sense knows that emerging companies have growing pains. The fact the author tries not to acknowledge: Tesla is an innovative disrupter transforming a $2 trillion industry, all the while exceeding customer expectations. My advice: find another book that tells the unbiased story - the highs and the lows - rather than this anti-Tesla hit piece.

Click exchange and get rid of this bad attempt at relevancy

This purpose if this book was clear by the 2nd chapter. The author smeared everybody from people trying to do something with their life to fellow journalists who don’t peddle “fake news” like they do. As I was listening I kept thinking “does he really want to relevant this badly?” Obviously he does. This is sad. Narrator was good though

Troll...... biased..... has this guy owned a Tesla????

This author clearly has never owned a Tesla.
I bought a USED 2013 Model S85 with 20,000 miles on it.
It has, for three years, been the most reliable car my entire extended family has ever experienced. Zero maintenance problems, after driving the car 60,000 miles all over the the USA.... all eastern states.

the tone of this book is.... weirdly... very oddly, critical and out of touch with the true experience of Tesla OWNERS.

If you have questions? Talk directly to a random Tesla owner, they will tell you the truth. I don’t know about ‘Edward’.

Slanderous hit piece claiming to be impartial.

Criticizes Tesla for not doing what traditional automakers do AND for doing the same thing.

Extensively researched and engaging. A unique portrayal of modern automotive business in America. This book will change your opinions about the company of Tesla Motors for better and for worse.
