About this listen

Sisters Sophie and Jess have grown up knowing that a few little lies are necessary. After all, everybody does it, don't they? But when Sophie discovers her father's secret, and Jess falls in love with the charismatic Jake, Sophie faces a difficult choice.

Should she keep quiet, or tear her family apart with the truth? And if she tells, who will pay the ultimate price?

This is a remarkably well researched and well written book about abusive relationships and their fallout. It is a compulsive, but at times tough read. Tough because there is no humour, nor lighthearted moments, leaving the reader/listener with constant tension. Nevertheless, it is a compulsive read/listen. After the first 25% or so, I could not put it down. I listened until 5am and put it on again immediately I awoke the following day to listen to the end. The characters are beautifully drawn. It is easy to engage with them, despite several being very unlikeable. The author must surely have researched the character traits of both perpetrators and victims and how these traits develop. She must also have researched common behaviours and the law around divorce. I am extremely impressed by this author and will now seek out her other books.

Remarkable book!

As the title suggests this book is about lovers and liars but is also about families and what happens within them. I am not sure why I chose this against my normal type of thriller but it was so accurately and poignantly written it made by heart leap at times. The threads running through the tale of manipulation and lies were brilliantly phrased - quite worryingly so. The way that the main male character was able to pinpoint how to hurt with such accuracy was heartstopping. The reader was able to guess the outcome of some scenarios but this did not detract from the need to carry on to hear the outcome. The narrator is always wonderful and she did a superb job with this long book. A very well crafted story which I can definitely recommend.

Very long but definitely worth getting to the end!
