In the heart-aching new novel from the author of the award-winning Golden Child, a mother searches for the daughter she left behind a lifetime ago.

Trinidad, 1980: Dawn Bishop, aged 16, leaves her home and journeys across the sea to Venezuela. There, she gives birth to a baby girl, and leaves her with nuns to be given up for adoption.

Dawn tries to carry on with her life - a move to England, a marriage, a career, two sons, a divorce - but through it all, she still thinks of the child she had in Venezuela, and of what might have been.

Then, forty years later, a woman from an internet forum gets in touch. She says that she might be Dawn's long-lost daughter, stirring up a complicated mix of feelings: could this be the person to give form to all the love and care a mother has left to offer?

'From the very first page, I knew I was in the hands of a master storyteller. An utterly arresting tale of love and grief, of the wounding and healing powers of family, of the many guises of a mother's love. It's an absolute triumph.'

Well… it is a story as old as the hills. The difference? The backdrop. The setting.

Part of my heritage lays in Trinidad. So learning about what it was to live there through different eyes was needed.

The story moved me to tears many times. You’ll understand when you listen to it.

The narrator is outstanding, utterly outstanding and captured the brilliance of the authors words.

I hope with all my heart that this book makes the Booker Shortlist at the very least and I wouldn’t be surprised if it won. Wow… a fantastic book.

Outstanding on all levels

I had never heard of this book, until the long list for the Booker prize was published. I decided to set myself a challenge to read at least five of the books. Well, I can certainly see why this is being nominated for the Booker prize. It is beautifully written and performed. If I had read the blurb, I probably wouldn’t have picked it up as it is not my normal genre. But without a doubt it is my favourite book of the year, replacing Razorblade Tears.

Deeply moving and beautifully written ❤️

The story of a family and it's missing members. Treats the topic of adoption sympathetically and avoids any clichés. An enjoyable listen.

Gorgeous book, lovely performance.

Loved the narrative, the strong writer’s voice and the interweaving of dual locations - Trinidad and South London. A story which quickly draws you in and takes you along , keeping you close at all times

Intriguing, beautifully written and simply told story of regret and resignation
