Summary

Lords of War is the first novel in the best-selling Star Crusades: Mercenaries series that follows the violent struggles of the Alliance, mankind's first interstellar empire.

Spartan is a living legend, a veteran of the Alliance Marine Corps, victor of a multitude of military campaigns including the horrific Biomech War. He is both loved and reviled by friend and foe alike, and now lives out on the fringes of the Alliance. He has fought for money, for his people and for the very survival of his species, and lost everything in the process. But when two of his closest friends are captured supplying weapons to the desperate Byotai settlers of Karnak, the fight becomes personal.

The Great Biomech War left millions dead, colonies burned, and cities turned to ash. Millions more continue to endure in the harshest of conditions. The Alliance attempts to restore order, yet already new enemies have begun to strike at will, encouraged by their weakness. Border planets succumb to the raids of warlords, and many doubt how long the peace will last, after it was won at such cost.

Since the end of this war, Spartan and his friends have worked to create an elite fighting force based at Taxxu, for use by the Alliance. Using the latest high-energy weapons, armored fighting suits and a prototype Confederate-class warship, it will be a force unlike any the Alliance has seen before. Spartan will use this and every other asset at his disposal to save his friends. Nothing, not even the entire might of the invading Anicinàbe clans and their fearsome clan leaders, can stop him, even if it means starting his own private war.

Star Crusades: Mercenaries is the third Star Crusades series, and is set in the aftermath of the apocalyptic Biomech War. The war may have been won, but after nine long years the future still looks bleak. Entire planets remain devastated, and millions of citizens are homeless.

Great sci-fi action audiobook set in space

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I love sci-fi and I think it is my favorite genre, so I am very picky about the books I choose to read. This audiobook is very well written and kept me interested all the way to its end. Because I am not a native English it is crucial that narration is good, and that I understand each word, and the narrator did a very good job with this audiobook! The reader is easily able to relive the experiences of the Spartan in his own mind and it makes listening to this material very compelling.

The story is about the military veteran Spartan, who fought countless battles and lost everything in the process. But when the two of his best comrades are captured he gets a new reason and motive to fight. To set them free! So If you are looking for some good action, interesting story, and multi dimensional characters, this audio is a good choice for you. I really enjoyed this shoot 'em up sci-fi novel and can't wait for the sequel!

Great read, now about that narrator

Where does Lords of War rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

For Mercenaries Book 1 is a great read, as good as those I've read from Jay Allan, John Ringo etc. Having a hybrid human cross-breed as one of the main characters is great and different.

What other book might you compare Lords of War to, and why?

I have listened to Ryk Brown's Frontiers Saga series recently and between the conspiracies and "realistic" scenarios, both writers capture my imagination. You don't need an engineering or astrophysics degree to enjoy.

Have you listened to any of Steven Morgan’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I haven't listened to Steve Morgan before, so this was a first. I think he read too fast. A slightly slower pace I think would have suited better, but then that's just personal taste.

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed reading the books and so was looking forward to listening to this. Any plans to do Star Crusades Uprising: The First Trilogy?

All round Terd

What disappointed you about Lords of War?

The perfomance is really bad.. i could barely focus on the story, at least i did not miss much there either....

Has Lords of War put you off other books in this genre?

No but it certainly shows not all books are equal

How could the performance have been better?

Having this book read at human pase would help, and actually have a reading that is human and better story with more in-depth characters...

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Want my money back !!!
