Summary

There is no choosing...only begging.

The Lords own me, and they are never going to let me go. At least, that’s what they tell me. Lord Alaric Cross. Lord Gideon St. Claire. Lord Sterling Beauchamp. Lord Theodore Wolf. Four brooding men who make my worst nightmares seem tame.

To the public, they are titled aristocrats with royal lineage. In secret, they make up the Lords of Darkness—an ancient order that rules the underbelly of England with a lethal, iron fist, leaving skeletons in their wake. And as fate would have it, my father was the fifth Lord of Darkness. His sudden death means I am now a Lady of Darkness.

I refuse to go along with their sick, twisted games. I will never fall to my knees before them, even when they insist on breaking me for pleasure. But like all predators hunting their prey, they sink their vicious fangs in, possessing my mind, body, and soul.

They may think they can win, but all they’ve done is awaken a beast that’s capable of breaking them. Deep down, I’ve always been my father’s daughter—a Lady of Darkness.

After all, it’s in my blood.

Lords of Darkness is book one in a dark reverse harem romance duet.

Please note: this book is dark. You will love the heroes, and then you will hate them before you love them again. If you’re looking for villains who eventually turn good, that doesn’t happen in this book. They are the antithesis to a romantic hero in every way. Proceed with caution. A list of triggers can be found in the author's note at the beginning of the book. You've been warned....

I love a secret society story

I read this book when it was released and enjoyed it but listening to it as a duet just elevated it for me to the next level and I was completely hooked from that brutal first chapter. Both narrators play various characters with a mix of accents and ages. Michael Gallagher plays all four Lords but with the slight differences in the English accents it is easy to follow who is who once the story picks up. Alaric is probably the most distinctive and immediately reminded me of Tommy Shelby although Sterling is still my favourite.

Brooke Daniels' performance as Harlow kept me completely engaged whether it was when Harlow is confused about her feelings (which is completely understandable considering the events of the book happen over a short period of time), her emotional flashbacks (these are dark so check your triggers) or when her snarky sense of humour shines through. I actually quite liked how Harlow came off as a little immature at times as although she had to grow up fast, she's only 18 and has literally had her world turned upside down so it makes sense. I also liked how she wasn't just immediately good at everything and how her mental health played an important part in the storyline.

This book is largely based around the developing dynamic between the Lords and Harlow and I would have loved to have seen more of what the Lords actually do as what we do see was interesting. The mystery of what Charles did is also still looming and although Harlow knows the Lords part in it I was surprised she didn't pursue it more. The last few chapters really ramp things up and hearing those chapters performed just made my jaw drop. I already have book two lined up next!

My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely and I have added all the authors works to my TBR
