About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The unfiltered truth about being a rugby player - from the horsey's mouth.

This book is not just about how I got back on my horse and went clippity-clop all the way to the World Cup final in Japan.

It's the story of how a fat kid who had to live up to the nickname Psycho grew up to play (and party) for over a decade with rugby's greatest pros.

From just about surviving the equivalent of 30 car crashes a game and crooning Adele for team spirit, to extensive field notes on the smell of the Scrum and the fine art of on-pitch relief. Then there's rugby's secret naked wrestling scene and how it was exposed.

In my world, you never know how the ball will bounce...

Joes book was open honest fun and revealing. It may cover Joes mental health issues he has encountered too but not without the way he solved it. I have just read three other recently released rugby books. This was easily my favourite. Very funny too

Lovely read

One of my favourite players and an incredible insight into his life on and off the pitch.

Clippety clop

The book is well read by Joe and he comes from a slightly different angle than many sports books. It comes across as an honest story and really good to hear him speak openly about mental health issues especially his own. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover as there are clearly two very opposite sides to his make up both of which are very endearing

Entertaining and honest

Great book, constantly in stitches with well delivered and relatable stories. Well done to Joe, Great role model.

Great book, well delivered.

I was always likely to be slightly biased as a passionate Quins fan who has watched Joe throughout his career. He always seemed like a great character and always seemed to be there for the fans.

This book was far better than I expected though. Throughout the fascinating rugby and autobiographical aspects, the discussions on mental health were amazing and invaluable for anyone who might ever feel isolated or alone with a depression.

Well worth a read/listen.

P.S. I have friends who can't be doing with Eddie Jones. They find his public persona to be egotistical, arrogant and nauseating. Whenever anyone criticises him in the future, I will point them towards this book. The relationship he has with Joe and his support throughout is amazing to hear about, and it is lovely to see.

A loose, but brutally honest head.
