Summary

An Astra Militarum Novel

A celebrated sniper of the Astra Militarum must shift her focus to commanding troops, and dealing with the complications that arise from hard decisions.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

It's a look into the haunted thoughts of a soldier wrestling with the complex realities of a galaxy at war. Every choice she makes has consequences for those under her command.

THE STORY

Transplant. Cadian. Sniper. Legend.

Sergeant Darya Nevic is all of these and more… but behind the stories stands a soldier haunted by the unwelcome fame her successes have brought.

During the Cadian 217th’s assault on the manufactorum world of Attruso, Darya finds herself out of her depth in a war that is fought with words as much as with weapons. As a fearsome winter closes in and her men begin to die around her, she will be forced to confront her doubts and make an impossible choice – to become the figurehead her soldiers need, or to believe the unimaginable promises of the mysterious t’au.

With the fate of her regiment in her hands, which path will she choose?

Written by Rob Young. Narrated by Colleen Prendergast. Running time 10 hours and 28 minutes (approx).

A good story with an unexpected ending

Very good and engaging story. Generally we'll read but most of the male characters had a hint of Jeremy Clarkson describing something as being the best....in the world. Nothing that detracts away from the story but once you hear it, you start to notice it.....all the time.

Awesome listen

Really enjoyed this listen. Story was fantastic and narrator is great. Characters who you could get behind in a series.

really enjoyed this

the only downside is the accent of one of the characters, thankfully not present for the majority of the audiobook.

you will know exactly which character I am referring to when you hear them 😅

A unique insight into a unique part of the militarum

This novel did a great job of bringing to life the main character and supporting characters. It also did a good job of immersing the listener into life on the front lines for a sniper team.

Overall it is a good listen with brilliant voice acting and immersive storytelling. My only gripe is that the last half felt very rushed. Ideally this could have been two books to allow for better pacing. Still, it was a fun few hours and worth it with a likeable main character.

Great story but narrator is bit off for me

The story is good and looks at a new angle in 41st millennium really enjoyed the different phases and character development, however the performance by the narrator is off when in dramatic scenes or for gruff soldiers they pretend shout which I find looses the Emerson and the voice is too soft for some characters.

Brilliant read

I loved this book - Rob Young has knocked it out of the park. Compelling protagonists, meaningful choices, thrilling battles, excellent narration. Everything I want from a Cadian novel. More please!

absolutely tremendous!!!

one of the best BL 40k books I've listened to in ages. it read like a 'sharpe' novel. well rounded believable characters in a warzone that was small and large in scale simultaneously. brilliant narrator as well. hope we see more of the characters in the future. 5/5!!!!

Politics, heresy and Cadia Still Standing

Although that phrase is starting to annoy me almost as much as Vulcan Lives! This is a really good boots on the ground IG tale that has some intriguing elements, IG units deserting to the enemy, elitism in Cadian units (AGAIN) I have read the 2 shirts stories that introduce these characters and it would recommend those to listeners of this book, hopefully we will see more of this sniper

nice bit of guard on tau action

nice there are no marines keep the story just on the guard fight the tau in more than one way.
cadia stands did start to creep in towards the end which provided a back drop of how they are dealing with that loss and the new recruits.

Endure the start. It gets better

The start is very confusing as it jumps between the non main character and different sides of the battle without much of a hint except a few Tau words to show what sides view your are reading. But if you persist to about 1/3 into the book the story really picks up and focus better on the main character(s).
