Story
We find Grace taking refuge in a secure compound in the Southern Appalachians. After reuniting with her father, she expected that the remainder of her journey home would be uneventful. Her dad was with her now - things would be okay. She couldn't have been more wrong. Nothing in this new life is easy. Grace and her friend Tom, a physically-challenged veteran utilizing a specially-outfitted track chair, find themselves suddenly thrown back in the fight. Robert Hardwick and Tom's mother become separated from their children and find themselves under attack from a highly-skilled and heavily-armed force. Most alarming of all, an innocent comment from a child's lips puts the remainder of Grace's family directly in the crosshairs of a violent sociopath. If he is able to carry out his plans, Grace and her father will not have a home, or even a family, to return to.

Teenager Amanda Castle was like a lot of people, posting pictures of her everyday life to a variety of social media sites. Not everyone who viewed her pictures was there to share in her experiences. One was there to steal her profile pictures. A terrorist in Frankfurt was desperate to please his leadership. He planned the perfect attack, one in which vulnerable people would be invited through social media to participate in a flash mob. There, the unwitting participants, thinking they were taking part in a random act of kindness, would find themselves engaged in a random act of terror.

Summary
Grace Hardwick's dad is a science fiction writer who makes his living destroying the world. When Grace decides to go away for her first year of college her dad, Robert, can't help but think of all of the potential ways that society could collapse and strand his daughter hundreds of miles from home. Then, near the end of her freshman year, it happens. Like a scene from one of Robert's books, coordinated terror attacks take place at dozens of locations around the country - including on the campus of Grace's university.
Grace and her father barely have time for a single rushed phone call before they lose signal. In that call, Robert reminds his daughter of the key he gave her when she left for school - the key that she constantly wears around her neck. She doesn't know what it opens. She doesn't know where the engraved numbers will lead her. All she knows is that her dad is not the type to let her go hundreds of miles from home with no backup plan.
With her roommate in tow, Grace embarks on a treacherous journey that may lead her home or may lead her right into the path of another stranded traveler - a disturbed gamer who sees nothing but opportunity in a world that now closely resembles that of his favorite video games.

" By the rocket's red glare... "
Any additional comments?
A series of numerous coordinated terrorist attacks across America causes widespread panic and social breakdown. One of there takes place on a college campus in Oxford, Mississippi. Two students, close friends from childhood, decide to head home. This story follows Grace and Zoe as they try to drive back the several hundred miles through the increasing chaos.
They are better prepared than the average teenager. Grace's father is an avid prepper and has not only given his daughter survival instructions since her childhood, he has also left her an emergency get-home-safe supply in locker number nine.
This is a terrific book and, even allowing for differences between England and the U.S.A. is one which everyone looking to get through a major, widespread disaster should read. So many aspects of security, personal and of property, are touched upon which would be invaluable to know should our small worlds fall apart. Not many people here in the U.K. are proper preppers, though I dare say many of us keep a few extra tins of food tucked away just in case, but Locker Nine brings home just how fragile is our civilised society and how easily people in fear can turn upon others. Following the story of two young people just trying to get back to their families in a time of emergency brings all of this into focus and makes for a thrilling, if chilling, book.
It takes a fine narrator to maintain a sense of reality, of ordinariness in a frightening scenario whist still conveying the fear and excitement of the journey. Kevin Pierce, with his steady, somewhat gravelly voice, does just that. Through him, the listener grows to know and empathise with the two young women, as well as getting to understand why some people go rogue, using the time of emergency to hurt not help.
The book has a slowly increasing tension as social cohesion continues to decay and it is obvious that the journey will not be an easy one no matter how well the travellers think themselves prepared. The ideas will stay with me into the future.
I received a complimentary copy of Locker Nine from the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. My thanks for this. I hope that the review I have written above conveys at least a small part of the pleasure I had in listening to it .
Definitely recommended.

Disappointing
I really wanted to like this book. The story had a good base..... but how some terrorist attacks can plunge the country into a lawless post apocalypse was unbelievable. There should have been either more attacks or at least more outside information as to the state of the country. I just found the whole thing really far fetched. It goes from normality to end of the world horror in 24 hours and that's just not how it'd happen. Too fast, not enough back story & felt like it was rushed along. Also having everything you need in a survival story doesn't show how they have to survive

Hopefully the power never goes out for 2 days.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No, unrealistic characters and character behavior.
Any additional comments?
Apparently on the same day that an attack happens somewhere in the country: Highways will be closed to the public, police will cease to be effective across the entire nation, random people will set up ambushes and road blocks, FEMA will somehow mobilize massive camps for stranded people. Day 2 : Wholesale random murder, complete absence of any law enforcement anywhere.
If this seems realistic or probable to you : This would be a great read for you. Also you probably weren't alive when 9/11 happened.

Awesome
Grace Hardwick's college life has changed when her school and other parts of the US are attacked. She gets a call through to her dad, Robert, who writes books about the apocalypse and prepping, he reminds her to use the key he gave her, Grace is confused but he just says use the key before being cut off. Once she follows the coordinates on the key and finds a fully stocked storage locker, locker number nine, of everything she will need to get home. This is the story of that trek home.
This is a exciting, action packed, suspense filled book. I really enjoyed it and think it would be really cool to have a dad like Grace's. You also get some glimpses into Grace's childhood which is really insightful and awesome. I had the audio version narrated by Kevin Pierce who did such a awesome job on this book I can't wait for more. Mr. Pierce really ahs a way with bringing these characters to life and giving you someone to root for in these tough times.

Well written, very real, and right now.
What made the experience of listening to Locker Nine the most enjoyable?
It has to be a combination of two things. A well written story line, and a narrator whose voice and pacing are so well matched to the authors work.
Have you listened to any of Kevin Pierce’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Kevin never fails to deliver, and once again he places us right there IN the story.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No laughter, no crying, but I had to stop listening for a few days. I began to listen to this audiobook a day before the National Weather Service decided a major hurricane was going to make a pass at the East Coast of the United States. I was well into the book as I shifted my focus from standard household chores to making preparations for what was forecast to be a Category 4 Hurricane quite possibly blowing right through my neighborhood. With the audiobook in my ears I was out driving from store to store collecting the things I knew I was going to need to survive the storm, and Kevin Pierce was reminding me of things I might have forgotten. It was surreal. Making my way through a giant warehouse store along with hundreds of obviously worried people all moving in a controlled panic was more than a little unsettling. I was preparing for a real life disaster.... but, I was in a Franklin Horton Novel, with Kevin Pierce as my guide at the same time. The story is present day. The characters are so well fleshed out and real, and Kevin's voice puts us right there in the story. It all became just a little too much.... and I had to stop listening for a few days. When the real life danger was past, and I turned my attention to cleaning up the damage, I returned to listening... And the novel was a welcome diversion from the task at hand.
Any additional comments?
I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook.

Awful, simplistic and boring
I liked the premise, the narrator was fine, but the book is just awful and boring.
There's no character or plot development at all.
There's very little action, which would be ok if there were any intellectual stimulation, but there isn't.
Quick summary, "preppers were all correct and they're all good people. Everyone else is crazy and stupid. Watch two weak girls stumble around until the boring end."

THE WORLD HAS BECOME GRAND THEFT AUTO
THEY WOULD NOT KILL THOUSANDS IN THE ATTACKS, THEY WOULD KILL MILLIONS AS A RESULT OF THE ATTACKS
All of Horton's books are entertaining. This book like all his books, starts right off with the action. I have been known to say in my reviews that I am not a chase scene, blowing things up type of lover, but Horton writes in a way that gets your adrenaline flowing. I specifically remember one scene in particular in which I found myself yelling at the radio, MOVE, STEP ON THE GAS, HURRY, GET OUT OF THERE. When it comes to action scenes, I have never come upon a writer who can put the reader in the scene as well as Horton does. Although you might not want to be in the scene, because of how terrifying it is. Horton's books are scarier than Zombie books (of which I am a big fan) cause they are so probable. IF TIMES ARE HARD YOU GOT TO BE HARDER.
I DON'T WANT YOU TO THINK I AM A CONSPIRACY NUT, BUT
I have to be honest, my politics are not the same as Horton's. That does not mean I can't respect and enjoy his writings. I also believe that his writings should be taken serious for the possibilities, that could very well happen, which he greatly illustrates. If I was president, he would be on my staff. As a Christian, I have trouble turning my back on a whole group of people like the Syrian Refugees, but also see the danger they could bring to our country. As far as preppers go this book is a little extreme. A college girl who has been carrying around a military tourniquet since grade school?
DON'T LET YOUR MOUTH WRITE CHECKS, YOUR ASS CAN'T CASH
In a lot of my reviews, I like to mention that I would like to see the story through the eyes of the bad guys as well as the good guys. Horton does that. The story starts out with us seeing through the eyes and minds of some of those involved in the terrorist acts. Later, one of the main characters is a guy named, Gamma Ray. He is a selfish gamer, who thinks the world is a game similar to Grand Theft Auto and he is the king.
KEVIN PIERCE
Horton's books would sell well without Pierce, but Pierce's narration has got to double or triple his audio sales. If I am trying to decide between two post apocalyptic books to spend my credit on and one his narrated by Pierce and the other is not, than it is not even a choice, it will be Pierce every time.

Great story and action
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Absolutely! I didn't want to stop listening.
Any additional comments?
Interesting take on SHTF. I always enjoy his book and am listening to The Borrowed World again. Waiting for book 4 on that series, it's awesome!

Different point of view on TEOTWAWKI
A little better twist on the end of the world. These kinda of books aren't great literature but that's not what they're for. I really enjoyed this one.

Interesting premise for parental contemplation
Are your children prepared to deal with a disaster? Do they have the life skills to exist without the usual protections and conventions of society?
This explores the concept of such training and preparations following two young women as they attempt to get home after a crippling event hits their area.
