Story
In Hauntings, James Hollis considers how we are all governed by the presence of invisible forms - spirits, ghosts, ancestral and parental influences, inner voices, dreams, impulses, untold stories, complexes, synchronicities, and mysteries - that move through us through history. He offers a way to understand them psychologically, examining the persistence of the past in influencing our present, conscious lives and noting that engagement with mystery is what life asks of each of us. From such engagements, a deeper, more thoughtful, more considered life may come.

Story
Exploring Jung’s concept of the Shadow, the unconscious parts of our self that contradict the image of the self we hope to project, Why Good People Do Bad Things guides you through all the ways in which many of our seemingly unexplainable behaviors are manifestations of the Shadow. In addition to its presence in our personal lives, Hollis looks at the larger picture of the Shadow at work in our culture. Accepting and examining the Shadow as part of one’s self, Hollis suggests, is the first step toward wholeness.

Story
In The Archetypal Imagination, Hollis offers a lyrical Jungian appreciation of the archetypal imagination. He argues that without the human mind's ability to form energy-filled images that link us to worlds beyond our rational and emotional capacities, we would have neither culture nor spirituality. Drawing upon the work of poets and philosophers, Hollis shows the importance of depth experience, meaning, and connection to an "other" world.

Story
In this extraordinary best seller, James Hillman presents a brilliant vision of our selves, and an exciting approach to the mystery at the center of every life that asks, “What is it, in my heart, that I must do, be, and have? And why?” Drawing on the biographies of figures such as Ella Fitzgerald and Mohandas K. Gandhi, Hillman argues that character is fate, that there is more to each individual than can be explained by genetics and environment. The result is a reasoned and powerful road map to understanding our true nature and discovering an eye-opening array of choices.

Story
James Hillman was a past master of alchemical psychology. This field uses metaphors derived from ancient alchemy to elucidate deep structures in the creative imagination. Creative processes are not random. By studying alchemical psychology we come to understand ourselves and other humans in surprising ways that frequently diverge sharply from the habitual understandings we have unconsciously absorbed from the cultures in which we were raised.

This classic introduction to the psychology of Carl Gustav Jung is important because it is the only English original text he sanctioned in his lifetime. In his personal foreword, he wrote: 'Mrs Frieda Fordham has undertaken the by no means easy task of producing a readable resumé of all my various attempts at a better and more comprehensive understanding of the human psyche. She has delivered a fair and simple account of the main aspects of my psychological work. I am indebted to her for this admirable piece of work.'

In the image of the black sun, Marlan finds the hint of a darkness that shines. He draws upon his clinical experiences - and on a wide range of literature and art, including Goethe’s Faust, Dante’s Inferno, the black art of Rothko and Reinhardt - to explore the influence of light and shadow on the fundamental structures of modern thought as well as the contemporary practice of analysis.

Another great James Hollis achievement
Would you listen to Living an Examined Life again? Why?
In his usual style James Hollis writes books that should be read and re-read over time as our understanding expands, there's more and more to take from his writing.
The only downside is not having James Hollis read it as in his other publications.

Must-listen if you find yourself in midlife crisis
Listening to this book is like therapy with a seasoned and intuitive therapist, only better. I am about halfway through the book, and I have been listening to each chapter several times (at least thrice) before I move to the next one. This is because the thoughts, ideas and insights are so jam packed into the text that is narrated, that I am unable to unpack it all during the first, or even the second time I listen to it. I feel like I am chipping away at it, taking away something each time I listen to it. Each time I have finished a chapter I feel a certain peace inside, one that comes from getting a better insight into my own psyche. Long after I am done with this book, I am certain that I will be coming back to it, possibly several times in my life. I feel lucky to have stumbled onto James Hollis work as I try to decipher this confusing juncture I find myself at, and I find myself relying more and more on his books, interviews and podcasts to help me get some clarity Hollis does not write how-to books. His books will not offer you ready solutions that you can apply and move on, but they will do one better. They will give you insights and perspectives that will help you chart your own way forward

Creating a path for the soul
Hollis asks the questions and offers insight in service of enlarging the soul and diminishing the constricting forces of ego. I am indebted to James Hollis for facilitating the opening in me to endeavor to live consciously, encounter my shadows, and seek always to align myself with living meaningfully. Living the Examined Life reads like Hollis's collected wisdom--wisdom that finds resonance in living the big questions--and is best read slowly and pondered deeply.

Polluting Jungian theories
There are traces of Jung throughout, but this is far too laced with the writer’s own moral preachings. I tried to ignore these and pluck out the good, but it got absurd. This was my first book by this author, I will not choose another.

I couldn’t follow the writer’s style
Try as hard as I have, I just can’t follow this writer’s style - in audio. I think it’s his sentence structure. Way too many clauses and qualifiers bury the core of every sentence. I love Jung’s work but I just can’t follow this author.

Interesting read
I had to work to get past his tendency to throw around a lot of big words just for the sake of using big words, which was too bad since he has some really good thoughts and ideas. Overall, I took away several new ideas.
