About this listen

Living Louder is a remarkable memoir of redemption and resilience.

A deeply moving account of compassion, faith, and enduring friendships discovered in federal prison. The author weaves a fascinating biographical tale as she opens our eyes and hearts to the real challenges and struggles that people in prison face. A story told with the passion and insight of one who lived it!

This book offers us stories that make us laugh, cry, pray, and most importantly, invite us to see the world from a different perspective. It has the potential to uplift the soul and reveal how bright life can be when filled with real compassion and truth.

How do you fight despair and learn to meet the world with a loving heart? How do you stay faithful in spite of failure? No matter where people live or what their circumstances may be, everyone needs hope. Portia spent 4.5 years of her life locked up in federal prison, and she was transformed. Hers is a story of the hope and kindness that we all seek.

Portia Louder is a gifted storyteller with an indomitable spirit and energy. She grew up with parents whose nonconformity was both a curse and a blessing. Portia gained a fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms. What is so astonishing about her story, is not so much that she found the guts and tenacity to climb out of some seemingly impossible situations, but that she describes those situations with deep affection. She gives us a story of triumph against the odds, but also a tender and moving tale of unconditional love and understanding encountered while she was locked away. Portia could be you, or your daughter, your mother or wife. She loves the sun and lives in Highland, Utah with her husband Chad and their children and grandchildren.

This is fascinating account of a thoughtful lady who like so many American entrepreneurs ends up in prison for pushing her business beyond the legal limits.

She reads this book extremely well, and the focus is relentlessly upbeat. So much so that I occasionally became skeptical of "Pollyanna in Prison." There's also a continuous religious theme which this atheist reviewer found hard to understand at times.

None the less, this is a well written account of what, when you read between the lines, is obviously a very tough time. Louder makes some interesting observations about how atomised and materialistic we all are. In prison her possessions fit into a single cardboard box, and she knows a wide variety of people extremely well - they talk and share stories and thoughts that leads to the kind of closeness and comradery that most of us only experience at school and possibly university.

There's a casual, careless cruelty to any incarnation system and the Federal Prison system described in this book is no exception. Louder gets put in the punishment block for three weeks for blogging (via messages to her husband, who is the real hero of the book). She's also given a release date, which is changed two days before it occurs.

This is a valuable and often inspiring account of prison life by someone who isn't your typical prisoner. I enjoyed reading it and recommend it.
