Heartbreaking

Stick with it - there are quite a few moments where it seems a little slow but I was glad I finished the book as it was pretty darn good.
I like the different perspectives and the narration of each is good. I like Imogen Church's narration style and I think it suited the characters in this story. It is heartbreakingly sad at certain moments and having grown invested in the characters, I found it hard hitting. Give it a try :)

Dire narration

Had to return after a couple of chapters - couldn’t stand narrator’s overacted voices any longer. Maybe it’s a good story, but to the detriment of the author, bad narration spoils the book completely.

The narrator ruined this book

I struggled so much with the narrator but I’m glad I persevered as I did enjoy the story. What ever made the narrator and production team believe that having ‘Grace’ speak like a Lenny Henry’ spoof ‘black’ character was in line with the story was beyond me!

If you can, read the book! The story is interesting and covers some interesting subjects.

Excellent choice

You know when you read a description about a book and just know it’s going to be good? This is one of those books. An unusual story with well developed characters that causes an emotive response in readers. Highly recommended.

Accents galore

I’ve listened to a few books read by Imogen Church. Interesting performer. I really enjoyed Turn of the key (just brilliant). Not so much The woman in cabin 10 (how many times can I say MosCOW to emphasise that he’s American?) and the dark dark wood was ok.
This book was not bad but I think I will have a break from Imogen Church now. She’s obviously really skilled and a true professional but I get the feeling she’s testing herself and seeing how many accents she can crowbar in to the plot. Does every other character have to come from a different corner of the globe? And as for Grace’s accent in this story....well I wasn’t too comfortable listening to it at times and wincing at others. I really don’t want to put her down at all, she really is a great voice artist and I seriously recommend Turn of the Key but this particular story didn’t grip me.

Wow - just wow

Wow, what a book! I absolutely loved this story. There were times when I didn’t. There were times when it was hard to read, emotionally, and the characters’ grief was so well written and narrated that it felt uncomfortable to listen. The story starts off quite slowly. It’s still gripping, and there’s still plenty happening, but you’re constantly waiting for the big THING to happen. And then so many big things happen all of a sudden and the rest of the story seems to rush at you. It’s heart wrenching and thought provoking, desperately sad, but with an undercurrent of friendship and strength. It touches on so many issues and will stay with you long after you’ve listen to it. The narrator is also excellent, really pulling you into the story and creating several very distinctive characters. I was a little hesitant about this book. I’d bought a few at the same time and left this one til last, having kept putting it off. But I will definitely be looking for this author again.
