About this listen

William Dorrit has been a resident of the Marshalsea debtors prison for so many years that he has gained the nickname "The Father of the Marshalsea". However, his suffering is eased by his close bond with youngest daughter Amy, or "Little Dorrit".

The dashing Arthur Clennam, returning to London after many years in China, enters their lives, and the Dorrits' fortunes begin to rise and fall.

A biting satirical work on the shortcomings of 19th century government and society.

Superb reading by Anton Lesser, with a distinct voice for each character, bringing them all very much to life.

A beautiful reading by Anton Lesser here. He has understanding and nuance for every line of the book. I listened to it all and no point do you feel he's just reading out the words. It's an amazing acheivement. I started reading the book alongside his reading and whenever the words lay flat on the page, they would come to life with his voice. He's also able to use that intense, poetic voice for the comic characters. I love his take on Flora. It's the sort of reading you could listen to for ..well..about 35 hours. Well done Mr Lesser - and I suppose Dickens too I should add.
The book itself was a revelation to me. As with all Dickens there are bits that don't work but the bits that do hook you in. The characters arrived in 3-D (Little Dorrit excepted of course) - both tragic and otherwise. The plotting is great (aside from the demise of Rigaud) and it finishes with a sweet poetic flourish in the last couple of paragraphs.
I think the highest compliment I can pay is that I'm sure at some point I'll listen to all 35 hours again!!

A beautiful reading

Very very good

This is an excellent story of Victorian London. Dickens weaves the stories of many characters together and brings it all to a satisfactory conclusion with the Good rewarded, the Bad dealt with and the Humdrum given purpose. Anton Lesser's narration is superb. I loved this book!
