Summary
'That nickname . . . "Little bird." It wasn't mine. I found out later he gave it to every little girl that came in to be injected. "Little Bird" didn't mean anything. It was a trick. There were thousands of "little birds", just like me, all thinking they were the only one . . .'
'One of the best books I have ever read. A story told with such emotion. Now that I've finished it, I feel sad - like I have lost friends.' - READER REVIEW ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
'A true, inspiring, heartbreaking, motivating, courageous, and loving story of a woman growing up in war-torn Poland . . . Despite the traumatic backdrop this book is heartwarming, well-written, and a joy to read. I will treasure this story and share with my family.' - READER REVIEW ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
As a reporter, Jacques Peretti has spent his life investigating important stories. But there was one story, heard in scattered fragments throughout his childhood, that he never thought to investigate. The story of how his mother survived Auschwitz.
In the few last months of the Second World War, thirteen-year-old Alina Peretti, along with her mother and sister, was one of thirteen thousand non-Jewish Poles sent to Auschwitz. Her experiences there cast a shadow over the rest of her life.
Now ninety, Alina has been diagnosed with dementia. Together, mother and son begin a race against time to record her memories and preserve her family's story. Along the way, Jacques learns long-hidden secrets about his mother's family. He gains an understanding of his mother through retracing her past, learning more about the woman who would never let him call her 'Mum'.©2022 Jacques Peretti

Tragic, and brutal, but lovingly told, Jacques Peretti shares, with recollections from his mother, how his family - or some members at least - survived against all the odds, with an attitude of determination and belief that life is essentially good.
This beautifully crafted account will stay with me throughout the whole of my life.
A story of unbelievable resilience, beautifully told by an incredible author.

This is a terrific book telling a story that was hidden for years but deserves to be heard. Undoubtedly a labour of love, in every sense, it is wonderful to hear it read by the author who is telling you, personally, the story he discovered of an amazing family history only recently discovered. I couldn't thank him more for introducing them to me
