About this listen

If you save someone's life, do you become responsible for them?

When Anna receives a letter from Adam, thanking her for saving his son Max's life with a bone-marrow donation, it's the first positive thing that's happened to her for a long time. Grief-stricken at the recent loss of her baby, she's failed to give life in the past. Now this four-year-old boy is alive and healthy because of her: it's a heady realisation.

Anna is desperate to get to know Max, yet terrified at how responsible she feels for him. So she decides not to tell anyone about him, or that she's arranged to meet his father. Soon she is immersed in a complicated double life, spending half the week with her husband, who believes her to be filming out of town, and the other half with Adam and Max.

But Anna has lied to Adam about who she is. And she's lied about her marriage. And soon these lies will catch up with her....

This is a great book that I listened to in a few days. What an emotional roller coaster! The main character, Anna, has been through so much in her life you can't help but feel for her and I found myself being ever more drawn into her web of lies. It's such a unique story, well written with fully developed characters and different to anything else I've read. Highly recommended.

Thrilling

I enjoyed the narrator and her use of accents seemed appropriate for the characters. Great Aunt Lil sounds like the spitting image of Judi Dench! The story kept my attention well, but I did have some moments of great dislike for our protagonist when I very nearly didn't continue listening. Glad I did continue to the finale, but she's a tough character to sympathise with!

An unusual modern heroine

I was really disappointed with this as I’ve enjoyed this authors work in collaboration with others.

I struggled all the way through, at four hours I desperately wanted to give up but I continued based on the point above but still wanted to give up throughout. I must stop reading/listening to books just because I’ve started.

The main character was so annoying with very strange narration. Sorry. I’m sure others will love it.

Hard work!
