Despite himself, the vicar was impressed. And from then on he couldn’t get enough of the spotlight, even when it always seemed to avoid him. Throughout his teens, he and his Dad trudged up and down towards London....

Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Life's What You Make It, the long-awaited memoir from one of Britain's best-loved TV personalities.
For a long time, I felt that I couldn't write this book. At first, I didn't think I'd lived enough, then life got busy and filled with distractions. In more recent years, there was always a very painful consideration - I knew where it would eventually have to go.
I have recently decided that the truth is the only thing that can set me free. The truth has taken a long time to make itself clear to me, but now is the right time to share it, all of it.
Television and broadcasting has been a part of my DNA for as long as I can remember. As a young boy I would make model TV sets out of cardboard boxes, while spending long summers at home, barefoot on Cornwall's golden beaches. Landing a job at the ice-cream kiosk, I would enviously look on as my presenting heroes took to the stage of Radio 1's Roadshow, an unforgettable event when it came to town.
In Life's What You Make It I look back with nostalgic delight on my life, from being a young boy endlessly writing letters to the BBC in pursuit of a job in broadcasting, to making it on to the Broom Cupboard, with my infamous sidekick Gordon the Gopher, to being on Going Live and starring as the lead in Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber's Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. It has taken four decades to get here, but I feel lucky to have called the sets of Talking Telephone Numbers, The Cube, Dancing on Ice and of course, This Morning, home.
I'm going to take you behind the scenes of my television home at ITV, into my career and my dangerously funny relationship with Holly Willoughby. I'm going to introduce you to my loving and remarkable family, and I hope most of all to tell you that life, it seems, is what you make it. Take it from someone who has sat on the very edge and looked over, it's all about the people who love you.

This book is niether honest nor enlightening
With apologies to all the Schofield fans who gave this auto-biography 5 stars - this is not a truthful, well written, or engaging autobiography and I'll give you my 3 reasons for saying that:
1. This book is not engaging - it’s not that Philip hasn't had a really interesting life, he has. But when everyone is truly wonderful, incredible and amazing, and life is similarly wonderful and incredible - interspersed with occasional moments of angst - there really isn't any real conflict to drive the narrative. It's like a series of excerpts from a 14-year-old boy's school essays on 'what I did at the weekend' written in a Janet & John 'everything was super fun’ style. It's all about how all these wonderfully supportive people have helped make him the success he has become. There's a lot of pretence at self-deprecation and vulnerability but you never get a clue about the real man - just a 2-dimensional caricature. Maybe that’s all there is?
2. There is almost no humour in the book. Don’t get me wrong, there are loads of funny things that have happened to Philip over the years, it’s just that the humour gets lost in the ‘it was such a hoot’ writing style. Humour comes from conflict and bleak moments rather than fun days on the beach. When the good bits are all magically amazing and the bad bits are truly awful and horrible, it is difficult for humour to push through. I did giggle at a couple of stories but there should have been more than 2 giggles in such a charmed life.
3. The third and most damning criticism is that, despite all his protestations of truthfulness and honesty, this is a fundamentally dishonest book. If you want an answer to why a happily married man in his fifties with 2 grown up daughters and an adoring wife decides to come out as gay, then you are going to be extremely disappointed. In chapter 14 he decides to come out. It’s a truly awful time in his life and everyone is fantastic about it, but Philip feels unbearably bad about the suffering he’s caused, but everyone is loving and understanding, and he hopes that everyone can learn from his plight ……. There is nothing in the book about when his sexual feelings began to change, hidden longings for one of his male friends, brief sexual encounters, starting to look at male pornography, homosexual affairs …… No-one wakes up one day and decides they are homosexual without some, or all, of those things happening – otherwise how do you know you are gay? I am sure Philip omitted these aspects to avoid even more hurt to his family. That’s fine, but if you leave things out of your biography to avoid hurting anyone then it’s not a truthful biography and it’s not going to be very interesting either – and that’s where we ended up with this book.
If you’re reading this autobiography to get a real understand of the man behind the TV image then you may want to look elsewhere. There are so many fantastic autobiographies on Audible, but this is not one of them.

Disappointed
Finished listening to this yesterday after repeated breaks and couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed with the overall product.
Positives: he’s clearly done well and has, as he so often tells us, a very blessed life BUT the big event, his coming out comes across somewhat narcissistically. Saint Phillip comes to mind. The enormous elephant in the room is WHY he came out. As a gay man, you don’t just decide you are gay. The apprehension about coming out is undeniable and he conveys that very well but there has to be a reason WHY and this just isn’t explained properly. It just happens. Did the appearance of a man trigger off a desire to admit his true sexuality, or did he finally get sick of hiding behind his public persona and decide enough is enough - I need to be honest? It just isn’t explained how such a momentous time in his life came about and needs further clarity, rather than him simply telling us “everyone tells me I’m an inspiration”.
Otherwise an interesting, if somewhat self indulgent listen (at times), but slightly lacking.

He just seems like a down to earth awesome guy who everyone would love to be friends with. Holly is a lucky girl to call him her bestie .
