About this listen

The truth is, we all tell lies... take a deep breath and get ready for the most twisty, tense and unsettling book of the summer.

'If, like me, you have been longing for a psycho-thriller of genius since you finished Gone Girl, then the wait is finally over. There are very few books in this world that are impossible to put down. Lie With Me is one of them.' Tony Parsons

It starts with a lie. The kind we've all told - to a former acquaintance we can't quite place but still, for some reason, feel the need to impress. The story of our life, embellished for the benefit of the happily married lawyer with the kids and the lovely home.

And the next thing you know, you're having dinner at their house, and accepting an invitation to join them on holiday - swept up in their perfect life, the kind you always dreamed of...

Which turns out to be less than perfect. But by the time you're trapped and sweating in the relentless Greek sun, burning to escape the tension all around you - by the time you start to realise that, however painful the truth might be, it's the lies that cause the real damage...

... well, by then, it could just be too late.

Critic reviews

Brilliantly executed - I loved every page. (Clare Mackintosh, author of I Let You Go)
A sizzling tale of deceit, betrayal and entrapment that is extraordinarily well-crafted and utterly gripping - a stunning summer read
A perfect thriller: clever, classy and shocking. I read it in one day. (Erin Kelly, author of He Said/She Said)
I doubt there will be a better beach read out this summer
An unsettling, disturbing but utterly brilliant, gripping read with a terrific twist
A dark and well-plotted psychological thriller. (Sebastian Faulks)
If you've had a hole in your literary life since finishing Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train, this is the book to fill it
Tightly plotted and taut with psychological suspense, I couldn't put down this gripping novel. In my mind, Lie With Me is set to be one of this summer's biggest hits. (Lucy Clarke, author of Last Seen)
Ingenious plotting, fine characterisation and assured pacing
Enormous fun, a psychological thriller worthy of Ruth Rendell or Patricia Highsmith.... The way the narration keeps us guessing is masterly
A clever, engaging thriller to frantically binge-read as the tension mounts and all the subtle clues that Durrant has skilfully hidden begin to reveal themselves
The word-perfect portrait of character leading to disaster, the unfurling dread, the ingenious plotting... I feel sick with envy that I didn't write it myself. (Alex Marwood, author of The Darkest Secret)
I was intrigued, unsettled and utterly engrossed from the very first page...so beautifully written and intelligently constructed (Laura Barnett, author of The Versions of Us)
Grabs you from the first page and never lets you go. If, like me, you have been longing for a psycho-thriller of genius since you finished Gone Girl, then the wait is finally over. (Tony Parsons, author of The Murder Bag)
Simmering with menace, and with a blisteringly taut and twisted plot. Simply superb. (Sarah Hilary, author of Someone Else's Skin)
I absolutely loved it: claustrophobic, gripping, and beautifully written with a growing sense of foreboding until the unexpected, final twist. (Claire Douglas, author of The Sisters)
Tense, darkly funny and morally complex. I wished Lie With Me wouldn't end. (Tamar Cohen, author of When She Was Bad)
An exceptional novel that seduced me from the first page and tightened its grip with every chapter. I'm not sure it has released me even now. (Claire Kendal, author of The Book of You)
A compelling, clever, claustrophobic read with a brilliantly executed anti-hero - I loved Lie With Me! (Angela Clarke, author of Follow Me)
A tremendously engrossing, unnerving story...delivers suspense from the outset and dark jokes and surprises throughout (Mark Lawson)

Struggled to get into this novel at first as the main character is a bit of a creep. However, the last few hours were really gripping. I loved Sabine Durrant's last two books but whilst this one is good it is my least favourite of her novels.

Unusual thriller; slow burner

Would you consider the audio edition of Lie with Me to be better than the print version?

It was wonderfully narrated, it gave depth to the storyline

What other book might you compare Lie with Me to, and why?

It is similar to many books in that it slowly reveals it's characters as harbouring dark secrets and lies and ultimately being different people from the ones portrayed at the start of the book.

What about Kirk Bage’s performance did you like?

He managed to tell the story and convey beautifully an undercurrent of something sinister.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No, I just enjoyed the story

Any additional comments?

Well worth a listen, although a stronger finish would have been more satisfying.

Compelling listening

Lie with me, has all the components of 'hook and twist' the story flows and paints such a graphic picture of its characters, surroundings and malice throughout. Excellently narrated!

Atmospheric!

Where does Lie with Me rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This question has something of an ironic answer, as I am currently reading it as part of the Theakston's Crime Shortlist. To say where this lies alongside the other nominees would be currently unfair as I've not had chance to read them all. However, against other books it comes out well because of its style and tone.

What did you like best about this story?

The surprising amount of detail taken to construct the backstory needed for the plot to work.

What about Kirk Bage’s performance did you like?

The performance matched well with the character.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Don't take things at face value

Any additional comments?

This is the first book I've listened to via Alexa and it has meant that I've been able to listen to it for longer as I could tackle my disability through it.

Story teaches you not to take things at face value
