Summary

John Ajvide Lindqvist's novel, a huge best seller in his native Sweden, is a unique and brilliant fusion of social novel and vampire legend. And a deeply moving fable about rejection, friendship and loyalty.

The international best seller and the book behind the film and play Let Me In.

Oskar and Eli. In very different ways, they were both victims. Which is why, against the odds, they became friends.

And how they came to depend on one another, for life itself.

Oskar is a 12-year-old boy living with his mother on a dreary housing estate at the city's edge. He dreams about his absentee father, gets bullied at school, and wets himself when he's frightened.

Eli is the young girl who moves in next door. She doesn't go to school and never leaves the flat by day. She is a 200-year-old vampire, forever frozen in childhood, and condemned to live on a diet of fresh blood.

Critic reviews

"A terrifying supernatural story yet also a moving account of friendship and salvation." ( The Guardian)
"A whiff of the new Stephen King. Don't miss it." ( The Times)
"Lindqvist has reinvented the vampire novel and made it all the more chilling by setting it in the kind of sink estate we all know from the media. Immensely readable and highly disturbing." ( Daily Express)

Right on

I listened to the pre view for this book and sounded good, but I really struggled to get into the book.
The voice was ok but just found it hard to follow.
I will keep it and try again another time, when maybe a different space will shed a different light.

A bit long.

I was on a quest for a good horror or ghost story and had this recommended to me. It's okay, it starts off well but I found it kind of lost its way a bit. There are a lot of characters some of which don't really play a great part in the story line but still get quite a bit of page time. I also thought it lacked atmosphere. Performance was good. On the whole worth listening to but not one to send chills down the spine.

Excellent vampire novel.

What did you like most about Let the Right One In?

Having seen both the Swedish and American movie I wanted more. The book was even more atmospheric.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Let the Right One In?

The scenes around Virginia.

Which character – as performed by Steven Pacey – was your favourite?

Oskar

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Often shock.

Any additional comments?

If you like the real vampire genre this is a must read. This is certainly not your modern teen vampire romance like Twilight. If you don't normally read vampire books but do read Scandavian crime fiction I think you will enjoy this.

Fantastic book

Fantastic book. I had already seen the film before I read it, but as the book is much more complex (and much darker in places) than the film, there was plenty to keep me interested. Excellent narration too.

Dark & Endlessly Fascinating

There's a lot going on this this dark and gripping story. A very unusual vampire book with characters that are evil but paired with an innocence and at the same time you like them and feel a bit sorry for them. The wonderful characters that don't quite fit in day to day life are all tied together in a dark, depressing atmospheric tale. i found it quite sad, touching and fascinating that the most normal relationship bullied Oskar has is with a vampire. Superb narration. Loved this book.

Fantastic story

This book was one of the world book night books in 2012, which is where I first read it. Some of the names and places are a little difficult if you are not used to them, so it was a delight to hear it read so effortlessly.

Some graphic sexual content, and obviously violence as it is after all about vampires, but it is the story between the characters that really draws you in.

There is something that I find quite profound about letting the right one slip in, and this story really had me caring for the main characters despite their flaws. I look forward to hearing let the old dreams die next.

Fantastic

Loved this. Not my usual genre however I thought this was incredibly well written and the narrator was perfect for this work. One you won't want to put down.
