About this listen

EVERYONE KNOWS DANIEL.
BUT NO ONE KNOWS WHERE HE IS.
'A heady, potent cocktail of a novel. I downed it in one' ERIN KELLY

Daniel is missing. No one has seen or heard from him in weeks. Beside herself with worry, his sister Caroline hosts an intimate gathering in her London home to grill those who knew Daniel best. But there's a stranger at the table - an accomplished psychic who claims to have met Daniel in New Orleans. As doubt blooms, tempers fray, and secrets spill like cocktails in the rowdy French Quarter.

How well do we really know the people we love, and what are they capable of doing?

Critic reviews

A heady, potent cocktail of a novel. I downed it in one (ERIN KELLY)
A dark, sticky, pungent gumbo of a book, Alice Slater's latest has the vibes of The Secret History and Daisy Jones and the Six . . . A wickedly fun read (KIARE LADNER)
Alice Slater serves up dark and twisty thrillers like a smoked Sazerac: intoxicating, sharp-edged and burning with obsession (KIRSTY LOGAN)
A veritable feast of secret passions and hidden betrayals. Alice Slater is the queen of the dark and delectable thriller (HEATHER PARRY)
A savage gem of a book. Slater moves from strength to strength with this blackly comic mystery, bringing both warmth and nastiness to a story of envy, deception and very, very good food (JULIA ARMFIELD)
Equal parts lush, funny and ghastly, spiked with hedonism and not a little vengeance, Let the Bad Times Roll is a delicious, bittersweet concoction that should be downed in a single gulp (KALIANE BRADLEY)
The writer's razor-sharp attitude and skill are on magnificent display in this tightly wound mystery
In the follow-up to Slater's delicious black comedy debut, Caroline's brother is missing and a psychic claims to have crossed paths with him 4000 miles away
Tense, arch and impossible to put down (ELIZA CLARK)
Savage, witty and all-consuming, both a love letter to bookselling and a thriller of the most unsettling variety (ABIGAIL DEAN)

The first novel ‘death of a bookseller’ is one of my favourite listens. This did a good job but didn’t quite have me gripped the same way. The male narrator struggled to deliver the American accent convincingly but I still enjoyed this one.

Not as good as the first novel

Can't say much about this without spoilers. Don't hang out with British aristocrats as their sense of entitlement combined with their psychopathy from inbreeding makes them all dangerous. Be warned.

Booze fuelled aristo thriller set in New Orleans

Utter pleasure. Smooth prose. Plot like a well oiled machine. Characters you can believe in. A joy!

Luxurious, menacing, immersive.

Another excellent novel! Having been to the locations in the book I found the descriptions to be spot on. As with her first novel, I enjoyed the way the author intertwines her message within the narrative.

I loved everything about this book, particularly the characterisation and the decadent setting of New Orleans. I didn't want it to end!

Deliciously dark!
