Phenolic: The disinfectants are derivatives of phenol (carbolic acid). They have a distinctive pine-tar smell and become milky in water. Bactericidal, tuberculocidal, fungicidal, and viricidal phenols are known for enveloped viruses at a concentration of five percent. In the presence of organic material, they retain more activity than disinfectants that contain iodine or chlorine. Cresols, hexachlorophene, derivatives of alkyl and chloro, and diphenyl are more potent than phenol itself.
