In Leonardo da Vinci hat die Universalität des Renaissancegeistes ihren Gipfel erreicht. Er war ein Genius, der die Malerei gar nicht als Hauptberuf, sondern als etwas Nebensächliches betrieb, der den Pinsel nur zur Hand nahm, wenn gerade nichts Wichtigeres seinen Geist beschäftigte. Diese Vielseitigkeit seiner Interessen hat ihn zwar verhindert, viel zu Ende zu bringen. An Zahl seiner Werke kann er mit keinem Berufsmaler sich messen. Aber indirekt kam seine geistige Größe auch seinen künstlerischen Schöpfungen zu gute. Da er geistig alle Berufsmaler um Turmeshöhe überragte, brachte er, wenn er malte, eine Kraft des Denkens, Sehens und Fühlens mit, wie sie keiner dieser Berufsmaler hatte. Nur das befähigte ihn, einer ganzen Künstlergeneration den Weg zu weisen. Nur das ermöglichte ihm, Probleme in Fluss zu bringen, an die vor ihm noch keiner rührte.
