Summary

A Warhammer 40,000 Audiobook

Across the warp storms of the Great Rift, a distress beacon calls for aid. The Rock is listening, for the Dark Angels have only their oaths to remind them of who they are.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

See what happens when the Dark Angels encounter a planet that might have even more secrets than they do! Can Master Lazarus cope with discovering what it really means to be defined by your oaths?

THE STORY

Supreme Grand Master Azrael summons Lazarus and his Fifth Company to honour an old debt on the Knight world of Reis – a planet upon which the warp has set its hungry gaze.

But Lazarus is not so sure Reis wants to be saved – its Knights are long lost, its governance is dogged by political strife, and internecine conflict hampers the world’s defence against an ancient evil. An evil which, like Lazarus himself, refuses to die.

A refreshing and surprising great book

I'd never listened to or read a book by this author before and was saddened that this DA book wasn't being written by one of the bigger authors used by GW but I'm glad I gave this book and author a chance and hope you do too. I pray to the emperor that this becomes a series surrounding this character who I've grown to admire though this book.

Brutal conflict for the 5th Company.

Entertaining, gritty and grim.

A tough day at the office for the 5th. Suffers due to release schedule as this is set before the Lion has returned.

Brotherhood

what an incredible book the master of the 5th baring his struggle and pain stand with him brothers and shows such humanity and understanding not to obnoxious to think a human could not possibly help. it's a must listen!

Standard Marine fair..

Decent story that felt like it would spill over into others with the Dark Angels really being in peril from the villain right up until the last… however random plot armour saves the day and I feel an opportunity was missed to create a good multi book epic.

Truly one of the worst 40K audio books.

As a massive Dark Angels fan I was super excited about this book. Unfortunately, the story is boring and predictable, but what makes it truly horrendous is the narrator who for some weird reason decided to add a truly cringe tone to everything every Space Marine said. They just sounded dum and really annoying.

It’s the first 40K audiobook in ages that I didn’t enjoy.

If you’re a big fan of the Dark Angels read the book, but AVOID this audiobook.

Not a bad book but not needed

With the return of the lion there was no need for a book predating that event, it was read superbly by John Banks

Just boring

Slow and no excitement.
Was so bored and let down by both story and a bore of a narrator.

The Lion is not in this book. But

I'm torn, before the return of the lion this book would be a decent run of the mill Dark angels battle book. it has a strong protagonist and fairly well written antagonists. However we all wanted more Dark Angels politics, their reaction to the Lions return and the infighting and subterfuge the Dark angels are known for. Instead it hints at Azraels obsession at the beginning and the epilogue hints are other events coming up but the battle itself just tells the story of a particularly grim battle of the 5th company.

John Banks does a great job as usual and Gary Klosher can write great combat, I'm sure he wanted to write the lion, maybe Mike Brooks has that honour now. So it deserves a listen for those aspects alone, but we are all waiting for more Lion and GWs annoying drip feeding of the lore gets very old. Dont punish the author or deprive yourself of a decent book to spite the cruel capitalists at GamesWorkshop. Just temper your expectations

The drop in quality continues…

Games Workshop need to invest more in the quality of writers and editors and not push this kind of painfully boring combats from the beginning of the book and protocolar dialogues that could be written by a A.I. Very disappointing…
