About this listen
After years of serving Earth in the Space Corps, Lieutenant Azure Lynwood only really wants one thing; to be able to publicly acknowledge his alpha lover, Major Tor Savan, and to begin building a life together.
But centuries of tradition and ingrained social biases are not so easily swept aside, and when Space Corps brass finds out about their affair, Tor is swiftly arrested.
Thankfully, help is on the way. Tor assures Azure that he’s friends with a brilliant lawyer who specialises in alpha and omega cases. The news is heartening… until Azure finds out that Tor’s flashy new lawyer is none other than Ethan McCallum, the omega who first taught Tor how to go through a heat, all those years ago.
But Ethan has an agenda all his own. Though brilliant, he’s also manipulative, underhanded, and doggedly determined to get his own way as he stirs the pot of social unrest and attempts to rewrite the injustices of history.
And so, as tensions heat and centuries of social customs are called into question, Azure will have to make a choice: team up with his arch nemesis or wave goodbye to his and Tor’s happily ever after.
Tor and Azure's story began in Hurricane and continued in Deluge. Books are best listened to in order.
©2019 Laura Taylor (P)2025 Gabriel DanesWe finally get a clearer view of the broader world dynamic, how Earth and Mars colonies function, the layers of discrimination against Omegas, and the tangled web of military politics that threatens everything the main characters have built. The romance stays front and center, but this time, it's wrapped in a rich, dangerous, and evolving world that raises the tension and makes the bond between them even more compelling.
Gabriel Danes once again does phenomenal work, every line of dialogue feels intentional and emotionally grounded. He brings each character to life, especially as new voices and perspectives enter the narrative.
My Highlights:
Expanded Lore: Finally, we get more insight into how the world operates beyond the immediate conflict, how Mars and Earth differ, the rigid societal control over secondary genders, and the fragile balance between duty and identity.
Stronger Supporting Cast: Side characters get more attention, allowing for meaningful interactions and a better sense of community around the leads.
Romantic Heat & High Stakes: There’s no shortage of emotional and physical tension, and this book leans into the connection between the main pair in beautifully written, high-stakes moments.
Narration Excellence: Gabriel Danes continues to elevate this series with expressive, consistent, and nuanced performance.
What I Think Could Be Improved:
While side characters had more involvement, I still wanted deeper emotional arcs for them. Some relationships felt like they were on the verge of becoming profound but didn’t quite cross the finish line.
A few moments could have benefited from slower pacing to really let the emotional weight hit, especially in climactic scenes where decisions were made quickly.
My Final Thoughts:
Lava was intense, romantic, and deeply satisfying. The stakes feel real, the world feels broader, and the relationship at the heart of it continues to grow in complexity and strength. If there are spin-offs or side stories, I’ll be first in line to listen, especially if they explore the politics, rebellion, or lives of other Omegas and Alphas within this world.
If future books maintain this level of emotional depth and thought-out world lore, I’ll happily keep listening. This series keeps getting better and I’m excited to see what’s next.
