Die siebzehnjährige Lily wächst Mitte der 50er Jahre in der chinesischen Community von San Francisco auf. Als sie bei einem Schulprojekt Kathleen kennenlernt, wird ihr klar, dass sie anders ist – und anders fühlt – als die anderen Mädchen. Die beiden freunden sich an und besuchen nachts heimlich eine verbotene Lesbenbar, den Telegraph Club. Hier taucht Lily in eine Welt ein, die sie maßlos fasziniert. Und ihr wird klar, dass sie mehr für Kath empfindet.
