Quest'opera raccoglie insieme sette volumi della Storia d'Italia pubblicati e disponibili separatamente, dal vol. 12 "Bisanzio" al vol. 18 "Il feudalesimo"; un percorso di cinque secoli di storia dell'Italia e dell'Europa, dalle invasioni barbariche all'Impero Bizantino, dall'espansione araba nel Mediterraneo fino ai regni dei Longobardi e dei Franchi, dove svetta la figura del primo imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero: Carlo Magno.
