La civilité nouvelle apparaît au XVème siècle, au début d'une période que les historiens ont appelée "Renaissance". Elle correspond à un idéal de culture et de sagesse désigné par le terme "humanisme". A une époque où la noblesse des cours se battait souvent à coups de poing et à coups de pieds, des philosophes ont cru bon d'instruire les jeunes princes des règles de civilité à l'honneur chez les citoyens grecs et romains de l'Antiquité.
C'est alors que sont nés les manuels qui dictèrent les comportements à adopter selon les lieux et les circonstances. Largement diffusés grâce à cette technologie nouvelle qu'était l'imprimerie, ces manuels de civilité ont ainsi défini, au fil des siècles, la courtoisie, la politesse, le savoir-vivre et les bonnes manières.
