Les trajectoires de Tom et d'Eliza sont opposées : tandis que Tom accepte sa condition, Eliza, pour éviter d'être éloignée de son fils Henry, va chercher à se frayer un chemin vers la liberté. Ce roman a connu un vif succès dès sa sortie aux États-Unis et a marqué la cause anti-esclavagiste.
